About this deal

Fusion 360 is one of the best automotive design tools, and it’s suitable for students (for free), hobbyists (free with limitations), and professionals.

The international teaching staff of Muner includes highly experienced lecturers and professionals. The contents of the Courses have been defined together with the contribution of the partner companies so as to ensure that training is in line with current requirements of the labour market. The aim is providing knowledge and skills related to the design of motorvehicles that are high-performance and suitable for competitions. From hybrid and electric motor propellers to production systems with typical features of the new manufacturing 4.0 environment.Performance goals can also be set in relation to specific systems, as opposed to the whole car. For example, the goals for aerodynamics might include a specific value for the lift/drag ratio, and the location of the center of pressure (CP), while goals for the suspension might include a specific value for roll sensitivity, weight transfer, suspension travel, steer and camber variations and so on. A reminder should be made to take into account driver’s seat, feet, knees, sight line and steering wheel position while working out the basic layout of the car. This can always change as the design progresses, but by now, it is possible to have a pretty good idea of the general layout of the chassis, in the form of a series of bulkheads. This Course lasts two academic years and covers the main aspects of vehicle frame system and racing vehicle architecture, with particular attention to the use of special materials and solutions. Particular emphasis is placed on the strong experimental nature of development activities and aerodynamic performance aspects. Key considerations for this type of design are the restrictions and opportunities created by the regulations and your budget constraints. Rhino is a free-form modeling tool that supports a variety of techniques, including NURBs (non-uniform rational basis spline). This is an extremely precise technique that allows you to model using mathematical representations, so it’s well suited to working on complex shapes like car designs.

Figure 2. G-G diagram comparing performance envelopes for a Toyota Celica and a Porsche 928S. The curves represent the combined (longitudinal and lateral) acceleration capability of the cars. (www.temporal.com.au) The approach is made of six steps, namely, Analyses, Constraints and Goals Specification, Preliminary Design, Detailed design, Testing and Development. These steps will normally happen in a non-sequential manner, with some restrictions arising in later steps demanding changes in previous stages.Conception – After the briefing with the race engineer on the required changes after the last race, the design team arrives at a new concept , or a worthwhile modification to an existing component.

Bear in mind that Fusion 360 is more limited when it comes to controlling things like surface curvatures than the likes of Alias, but it’s certainly more beginner-friendly. Plus, there are lots of tutorials to help guide you through the process. To illustrate, let’s picture a wheel on a race car. The wheel attaches to a tire and it also attaches to a wheel hub. If I decide to change the wheel from a 4 bolt by 4″ bolt circle to a 5 bolt by 5″ bolt circle, I’ll need to change the wheel hub as well. Now let’s say that wheel is no longer available in the size we need to fit the tire. I’ll need to change the tire as well. Further, what happens if the new wheel hub doesn’t fit the spindle I have? I’ll need to change it too and so on… Once you choose the type of vehicle you’re interested in, it’s time to begin thinking about how your vehicle is going to look, perform and cost. Vision/Concept Then there’s CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) CAE (computer-aided engineering), such as Autodesk Alias, Solidworks, and CATIA. These are built for creating manufacturable, industrial-grade car designs. These are the most expensive and complex type of car design software and are used by companies like Tesla and Aston Martin.Rhino 3D is one of the few car design automotive software that offers a native mac app, and has a wide range of powerful modeling tools that make it suitable for modeling cars.

CW) Depending on the nature of the racing, having a custom fabricated part instead of one which is off-the-shelf can be a performance advantage. The performance gained needs to be weighed against the additional costs of custom fabrication.

Design Process

Solidworks isn’t just used for practical, real-world car designs, but some of the most creative car designs in films and TV shows, too. One particularly interesting is its use by Dave Clark who used it to both create and visualize designs for cars featured in Mission Impossible, Terminator, and Ready Player One. There are also a variety of YouTube videos showing the car design process, which give you both an idea of the software’s capabilities and guidance on how to design cars with it. Handling – The race car should have good enough control capabilities to allow the drive to operate it at the limits of the g-g diagram. This includes specifying details for some control systems such as steering, suspension, and other parameters. There is much more analysis that could be done at this stage toward optimizing the preliminary design. Having recently graduated from a graphic design course and being self-taught in the art of 3D Design, Luis set about digitally tinkering with the 2000GT using Photoshop and Blender, heavily using influences from his love of classic cars, motorsport and the Toyota brand.
