Without a child of my own, I didn’t know what would happen to my stories, my letters, my sentimental items and junk. Despite the counselors, the conferences, the paperwork, the questions we asked you directly, it was hard to understand how feelings got processed. All our loves, traumas, celebrations, and pet peeves are informed by uncountable preexisting circumstances and expectations that collect and simmer over lifetimes, yielding much of the psychological stew that makes up who we are.reinforcing the opinion that the controversy stems from adult's subjective interpretation of the narrative that pose creates.

His greatest concern is keeping his men safe, a group of men who are younger than our twenty-two-year-old father. This novel reads like the methodical reconstruction of memory, by turns insistent and self-critical, from a perspective that is rarely considered in literature. They grew up together like any other siblings, and shared a bucolic childhood in Northern California. The lack of dialogue means no relief from the repetitive personal observations which – while, as noted, the prose can be lovely – don’t amount to a story or even a very interesting essay.I'm pulled out of the story and jerked into paying attention to the author's sudden urge to remind me that she's doing something "different" and literarily important. It argued that white homes weren’t equipped to raise a Black child in a racist society, that these adoptions were done for the benefit of the white family rather than the welfare of the child, and that Black families would adopt in higher numbers if the adoption process didn’t effectively eliminate their applications. The main character is struggling to to create her own little family and dealing with infertility, all the while facing her complicated feelings around her brother, her own childhood and how her family came to be.

She argues when these private moments are placed in the public eye, they are interpreted through societal codes such as, motherhood; allowing the viewer to interpret the narrative of the work through their subjective views. In describing a young woman talking to the narrator's husband at a party: “Her hands were thrust coolly in her pockets, as if pinning her otherwise weightless frame to the earth. A little corner shelf-wear with light lower front corner crease to cover else VG bright and unmarked. It deals with issues around international adoption, racism, addiction, sibling bonds formed and stretched. Every moment seems to illustrate a transcendence, yes, but those moments remain ragged and of the flesh even as they float towards holiness.

This is the way we carry trauma, in our bones, in our essential material; I believe it’s also the way we carry ecstasy.
