About this deal

With a foreword by Carl Jung (1875-1961), the famous psychiatrist who founded analytical psychology, and a preface to the third edition by Hellmut Wilhelm (1905-1990), an expert on the I Ching. There one weak line must tame five strong lines, but here four strong lines are restrained by two weak lines; in addition to a minister, there is a prince, and the restraining power therefore is far stronger. Here uprightness is the outcome of sound qualities of character, whereas in the corresponding line of the preceding hexagram it is the result of innate humility. A man who has virtues like a well of this sort is born to be a leader and savior of men, for he has the water of life. On the other hand, applied to human conditions, it refers to the time when inferior people gradually begin to disappear.

And such a truly kind heart finds itself rewarded in being recognized, and thus the beneficent influence will spread unhindered. In such times of shock, presence of mind is all too easily lost: the individual overlooks all opportunities for action and mutely lets fate take its course. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. So too with leaders of mankind: it is all–important that one should drink from the spring of their words and translate them into life. But his comrades, who no longer heed any warning, will in their excitement certainly be displeased with him.In the course of time, owing to the great repute for wisdom attachingto the Book of Changes, a large body of occult doctrines extraneousto it -- some of them possibly not even Chinese in origin -- havecome to be connected with its teachings. Thus also where men are concerned, wild force should not be combated directly; instead, its roots should be eradicated. Yet we must not overlook the fact that apart from this mechanisticnumber mysticism, a living stream of deep human wisdom was constantlyflowing through the channel of this book into everyday life, givingto China's great civilization that ripeness of wisdom, distilledthrough the ages, which we wistfully admire in the remnants ofthis last truly autochthonous culture. If one is serious and composed, he can acquire the clarity of mind needed for coming to terms with the innumerable impressions that pour in.

First Editon, Second Impression - Boards are worn and badly moisture damaged, and overall in poor condition - Spine ends crushed - Corners bumped - Endpapers unevenly tanned and stained - Edges of text blocks toned and marked w/ stain to volume two bottom and fore edges - Light marginalia in pencil throughout - Spines cracked in places but text block still strong - Dustwrappers grubby and torn w/ loss to corners, spine ends and edges w/ volume one most affected - Volume one has a couple of cm of spine ends missing w/ 6cm tear from missing spine head area travelling down spine - Spine tanned and marked - Small horizontal piece of tape to front flap fo volume one - Books ow/ solid - An influential work found only rarely as a two volume set - xliii, 395; [12], 376 pages. And once we have gained inner mastery of a problem, it will come about naturally that the action we take will succeed. This hexagram shows a fire that breaks out of the secret depths of the earth and, blazing up, illuminates and beautifies the mountain, the heavenly heights. Since he is not striving for any special advantages for himself but is working unselfishly to bring about general unity, his work is crowned with success, and everything becomes as it should be.Through the collective piety of the living members of the family, the ancestors become so integrated in the spiritual life of the family that it cannot be dispersed or dissolved. The " Transformed Hex" describes the future situation, after the lines have changed, and if you follow the advice the I Ching has given.

While THE WELL relates to the social foundation of our life, and this foundation is likened to the water that serves to nourish growing wood, the present hexagram refers to the cultural superstructure of society. The ridgepole on which the whole roof rests, sags to the breaking point, because its supporting ends are too weak for the load they bear. The idea of increase is expressed in the fact that the strong lowest line of the upper trigram has sunk down and taken its place under the lower trigram. If a man were to pile up riches for himself alone, without considering others, he would certainly experience a collapse. These speculations are also to blame for the fact that the seedsof a free Chinese natural science, which undoubtedly existed atthe time of Mo Ti [4] and his pupils, were killed, and replacedby a sterile tradition of writing and reading books that was whollyremoved from experience.
