About this deal

They took an age to dry and produced so much ash that the press contraption was soon relegated to a far corner of a shed to rust! It takes 3 or 4 coke hods full at a time and is very controllable from slow to very hot and fast burning. Paper log makers use waste paper in the form of newspapers, magazines, junk mail, thin card or shredded paper to make burnable 'logs' suitable to use in a wood stove, a traditional open fire or in a chiminea or fire-pit. The whole process was very messy and even though i dried the briquettes well, they did not burn particularly well, primarily down to the fact that paper does not contain a great deal of wood and mostly Kaolin! I made myself a pallet breaking bar, it's 5' length of 40mm tube with a large curved fork on the end, you insert the fork over one slat and under another and just pull it apart.

I have a wood burner and have found that wood shavings burn on it okay as long as I have some pieces of wood among them.Is to shred everything into a pulp (using our free mixing paddle) this helps extract the lignin in the paper and act as the bonding agent. I did however mix some in with the paper pulp to bulk it out which works if you put in the right amount - put too much in though and the blocks disintegrate once you've pressed the water out - a binder might have solved that though. I looked into this, those things appear to be largely worthless for shavings, more for papier mache. You can't put it on an already burning hot fire, you have to let it burn right down before refilling or you get flash back! For a tedious task like creating hand-made logs for a fire, I prefer the easier option, with our quick and easy to use briquette press.

My parents are both into wood-turning and are members of a local club so I often get small hardwood offcuts but if I could make use of the shavings/dust too it would be nice as I can get it by the bag on their meeting nights. They can be made at any time of the year even in the winter but as they need time to dry out it is better to make them in the spring or summer months if you can. It's a lot easier to get hold of waste paper than pallets, unless you happen to be in a trade or location where scrap pallets are plentiful. One day when I have more time I might have another go at, as there must be some potential for free heat in it but it's behind a very long list of other things to get done first. It's way too slow a process as it is though and given the availability of free wood I didn't really take it any further.At that point you just need to go back and add more paper pulp - I'm guessing the mix was something like 75% paper pulp to 25% wood shavings/dust max but that's just a guess. Shredded paper takes up way more room than flat sheet and if you aren't careful you will end up with little shreds of paper all over the place if a mischievous pet or rambunctious child gets into the shredded paper pile.
