Whether you’re touring Scotland by car on a self-drive holiday, motorhoming or campervanning in Scotland or exploring by motorbike (or any other vehicle! Edinburgh is arguably the prettier of the two cities and hosts a number of festivals, including the world famous Edinburgh Festival. It’s also close to Steall Falls– the second highest waterfall in Scotland at 120m and the waterfall in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in case you’re wondering! These include the excellent National Museum of Scotland, Museum of Flight, Museum of Rural Life and the National War Museum.

Wild Camping is regulated within the Trossachs National Park, so be careful where you park up for the night if you’re in a camper.

Make sure to plan your Scottish hike carefully, listen to local guidance and never venture up without informing others of your whereabouts. Some islands are easily reached and offer excellent tourist facilities, while some are very remote and off the beaten track. From the islands to the highlands and impressive sturdy cities to remote mountain glens, Scotland is a destination that will blow you away with its incredible natural beauty and fascinating cultural highlights. For a more visual inspiration, check out the most beautiful places in Scotland as voted by Rough Guides Readers. We recommend Edinburgh Club Campsite, Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park Club Campsite, Forfar Lochside Club Campsite and Balbirnie Park Club Campsite as fantastic locations to go tent camping in Scotland. Make sure to drive to Queens View and grab a bite to eat in the Fern Cottage Restaurant that sits quaintly in a stone cottage on Ferry Road. If you want to enjoy a Scotland road trip without the weeks of planning and struggling to figure out where to visit first, consider using our Scotland Road Trip Planner. I would really love to get to the Isle of Skye, the Duncansby Stacks and Dunnet Head for those incredible coasts and views. We got our favourite travel drone out and took some amazing shots of the viaduct and Loch Sheil, as you can see in the video above.

The ‘best road trip in Scotland’ is going to be subjective based on what you enjoy and also what the weather is like! In addition to its amazing castles, coastline, forests, mountains, and lochs, this region is one of the best places in Scotland to use as a base for sightseeing tours. Ideal for tourists with hundreds of distinctive tourist symbols and tourist information centres all shown. However, there are several incredibly scenic roads in Scotland which we highly recommend you explore- some of them are perfect for just a few days, while some require a little more time to drive. Lovely Christmas Markets and winter festivals await visitors during the winter months, but this itinerary can also be turned into a summer festival hop!
