About this deal

But in overall, this was a gorgeous book about refugees, finding a home to belong, feeling safe, friendship, and more. A great book to share with young children to discuss issues facing others, encourage acceptance and kindness and develop empathy. It is the beginning of a new term and there is one spare place in the class – which is soon to be taken by a new boy; Ahmet.

Nevertheless, this engaging book can serve as a resource for readers who want to learn more about the global refugee crisis without being flattened by the weight of the world. But it also covers issues such as bullying in schools, tensions within families and the importance of friendship. While I understand the need for books about the refugee crisis and to encourage kids to be emphatic, I don't feel this was the book. Well deservedly winner of the Blue Peter Best Story award 2019, this book tells the story of children who set out to help their classmate and friend. petit et grand coup de cœur pour ce livre si nécessaire et si beau, malgré cette réalité que trop d’enfants vivent encore de nos jours 🤍 c’est l’amitié, ce sont les réfugiés et leur réalité et tout ce qu’ils traversent, mais c’est surtout du beau et ça réconforte de savoir qu’il existe d’aussi belles personnes (bien que ce soit ici des personnages). We didn’t understand quite what that meant, when we were first told, just as Alexa and her friends don’t quite understand either. This moving tale centres around two eleven-year-old girls, Usha - a quiet introvert grieving for her grandmother - and Imtiaz, who grew up in a children's home and has been adopted by Usha's family.

Sometimes I think everyone likes to believe a lie even when they know it’s a lie because it’s more exciting than the truth.

I loved how easily they embraced Ahmet in their group and how they were there for him to help him out. Near homophones have very similar spellings and can sound very similar depending on how they are pronounced. This book tackles many issues in a light and easy way including diversity, curiosity, bullying in school, built-in rules of schools and friendship.

And after the event with the big plan I loved how the adults protected the kids and patiently told them what to do (No comment! It talks about refugees, their struggles and their lives, in such a way which can be easily understood by kids. It's funny, thought-provoking, kind and it presents many lessons about today's world and how kindness, friendship and avoiding stereotypes is so important.

You may also want to download our Embrace Our Differences PowerPoint to provoke discussion with your KS2 children. You wanted to cheer, you wanted best friends like Ahmet found, a head teacher like Mrs Saunders and those biscuits that were eaten on the tube. This leads them to question what exactly a refugee is, how he came to be at their school and how they can become friends with him when he seemingly won’t talk to them. Best childrens book i have read really inspiring to follow your dreams and treat people the same as everyone else. This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class).

It was just the sweetest thing, especially since mom worked so much due to dad dying years and years ago. Es ist dabei kindgerecht geschrieben, aber auch so berührend und fesselnd, dass es auch ein wertvolles Buch für erwachsene Leser ist! This book’s greatest strength is how it conveys the emotive nature of its main theme in a way that opens up conversations instead of shutting them down. Her books are especially noteworthy for helping the children of today understand and deal with a range of issues in a narrative that they can relate to in an engaging way.
