About this deal

In all other cases the updated EULA applies to all access to and use of the Device and the Smart Services thereafter. Switch effortlessly between your favourite apps and devices to stream content – the customisable interface makes it quick and simple to use. Buttons are smushed close together and if you have sizeable digits such as myself, you’ll jab at the wrong button with regularity. Some backlight blooming – a typical artifact with LED-backlit TVs that feature local dimming – can be seen with challenging material, but that’s the exception rather than the norm.

Dialogue was clear for the most part, however, so you could get away with not using a soundbar here if that’s your preference.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL LIABILITIES WITH RESPECT TO YOUR USE OF THE SMART SERVICES (REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT SUCH USE REQUIRES REGISTRATION, CREATION OF A USER ACCOUNT AND/OR PAYMENT OF A FEE) AND MATERIALS. is excellent in the HDR Filmmaker Mode with no issues seen with over-brightening and just a slight darkening popping up in the lower black areas, but nothing we are concerned about at all.

Home, back, and live TV buttons reside directly below the pad, as well as playback controls, a volume rocker, and a channel rocker. We did notice a few odd instances of the sound becoming a little bit lightweight and distant when playing some film content, and believe this is a bug with some playback of Dolby Atmos tracks, which was inconsistent and didn’t occur every time we played some Atmos content. So with that out of the way, the UK model of the 55-inch U8HQ uses an IPS-ADS panel with a Mini LED FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) backlight with 112 zones. The manufacturer is vague on the details of exactly what this entails, but it more than likely adds edge enhancement, noise reduction and upscaling algorithms. It doesn’t have a native 10-bit panel commonly used for HDR, instead employing 8-bit + FRC– a form of dithering that cycles between different colours with each new frame to match the colour range of a 10-bit panel – and results are pretty good.

Despite having a built-in, back-mounted subwoofer, the U8H’s cabinet is slim and its screen is framed by an extremely thin, silvery bezel. That model offers similar peak brightness (1,700 nits with an HDR signal and an 18% white field), but boasts OLED-challenging contrast with effectively perfect black levels because of its miniLED backlight. The Hisense U8Q puts itself into contention with a satisfying upscaling performance and enjoyable 4K performance.
