About this deal

We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. The artwork, done in watercolor, is intensely engaging, capturing the emotional trajectory of the story perfectly. Browne is known for his gorilla/monkeys theme in many of his books, and the illustrations in this one were powerful and engaging. She tried to share her interest with her dad, but he was always too busy to entertain her requests to visit the zoo.

This story is of Hannah whom is a little girl, who wants nothing more but to spend quality time with her very busy father. The expression on the cat is funny to a kid, and is perhaps the one bit of true hilarity in the whole book, which is bitter-sweet and melancholic. A feature of Anthony Browne’s work is that although the characters are depicted in almost naturalistic style, “in all styles we can only interpret faces with certainty as positive, negative or neutral in affect, with more subtle readings dependent on contextual and intermodal guidance. For more on postmodern picture books see David Beagley’s lecture on iTunes U, or my notes on that, here. The world around the character is not what it first appears, suggesting there’s a hidden depth to everything.Browne has written or illustrated over fifty books, and received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2000. I followed this with A Walk in the Park,a story I was to revisit 20 years later with Voices in the Park.

Add speech or thought bubbles to each of the illustrations to show what the characters are thinking / feeling. The night before her birthday she asks for a gorilla and is suprise to find a stuffed toy as a present on her bed. There’s something a little disturbing about this, unless we realise that the gorilla is a fantasy stand-in father. Feeling lonely the night before her birthday, her love for gorilla's takes her on a magical dream to the zoo! The illustrations here are sublime; there's real heart in them and they are incredibly lifelike in a way that's almost eerie.

Anthony Browne is an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator of children's books with over forty titles to his name including Gorilla and Willy the Wimp. The illustrations here are sublime; there's real heart i But her father had to work hard to support her and often did not seem to have a lot of time to entertain her. That night Hannah dreams she goes on a dream date with her life-sized gorilla, who is now a stand in father figure. A young reader will feel smart, in a Where’s Wally/Spot The Difference kind of way, for picking out what’s strange about each picture. Probably my most successful book is Gorilla, published in 1983, and it was during this period that I was badly bitten by a gorilla whilst being filmed for television at my local zoo. Anthony Browne was another author recommended to us at university, therefore I chose to read one of his books that we hadn’t discussed in class.
