Terry Pratchett's Dragons at Crumbling Gate is a series of 14 short stories penned by Sir Pratchett during his youth and unfortunately it shows. That made me happy as my top favorite stories were the "Tales of the Carpet People" and The Carpet People is one of the full length novels. Moreover, each story was wonderfully illustrated by Mark Beech whom I had never heard of before but who did a splendid job (his quirky illustrations reminded me a little of Quentin Blake who worked with Roald Dahl).The protagonists tend to be well-meaning, resourceful characters who want either adventure for themselves or a solution to the problems facing their friends and neighbors. My favourite stories were Dok the Caveman, The Abominable Snowman and Father Christmas goes to work at the zoo. If you have children, or grandchildren , of a young age like I have,you will have a great amount of enjoyment reading these to them. A few scenes of mild violence, such as a battle between opposing forces of Carpet People and a fight to the death between a heroic tortoise and a deadly adder.
