About this deal

Corrugated Cardboard - I used the cardboard from a Husky air compressor cardboard box. Should be stiff Today we will learn how to build a mini electric spin art machine and then use it to make colorful art! Giant spin art has been fun to do with friends. We usually spin 20″ round canvases, but sometimes try larger ones. Our record size so far is 4’×3′. Surprisingly, just about every canvas comes out great. Once you have the motor turning, add a switch to the circuit. You may have to re-arrange the circuit and you will need to use alligator clips to connect everything. Can you make the motor spin when you flip the switch on? Can you make the motor stop after a little while when you flip the switch off?"

Spin Art Machine with a Salad Spinner DIY Spin Art Machine with a Salad Spinner

In fact when our classes were in session last year before the pandemic we challenged our afterschool students to make these and then we set them up for a school wide event! Even though we definitely had some ups and downs (hobby motors aren’t really supposed to last hours on end) it was a fun way to showcase our students’ work and to have a fun art based activity for kids to try. I’ll share more about how I set it up in this capacity later in the post. How to Make a Spin Art Machine Materials I first read about making a spin art machine in one of my favorite books for makers: Tinkering by Kurt Gabrielson. A celebration of the Maker Movement, a family-friendly showcase of invention and creativity that gathers Glass or any other flat, transparent surface. The glass should be approximately the same size as the paper. Although it is possible to use the glass from a picture frame, we found using a picture frame made it more difficult to get good coverage. We recommend using a glass from your local dollar store. About: I am the Design, Tinkering and Technology Integrator at Mark Day School in San Rafael, CA (http://www.markdayschool.org). I teach technology and maker curriculum to K-8 students. So we tried it, and after burning out the motor from a box fan, we realized that a corded power drill would work better. Corded power drills are cheaper than battery-operated drills, and they typically have greater torque. Many even have a speed knob on the trigger, offering more control. WARNING We love painting with kids around here – have you seen our painted pots or our sidewalk chalk paint recipe? We decided to add another, similar craft to our repertoire: spin painting. What a blast from the past! Adults only: Slice off a section of the cork using an Xacto. Hot glue a small plastic lid to the cork. Next glue a second larger plastic lid on top of the small lid. You now have a basic spinner!

SPIN ART USING A CANVAS, PAINT, AND A DRILL HOW TO MAKE SPIN ART USING A CANVAS, PAINT, AND A DRILL

We have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t like spin painting, and if you haven’t tried it yet, we highly recommend giving it a try whether with a salad spinner or a machine. (And if you have done it before, perhaps it’s time for another round?) Photo by Jean Van’t Hul The big question is what should we do with all of these spin paintings? Your salad spinner art is going to be a surprise. Having said that, you can always add more paint and close the lid again if you don’t like what you see! When we bought the machine, we didn’t realize that it was an entire kit that included not only the spin art machine itself but also four squeeze bottles of paint, paper, and display cards. Photo by Jean Van’t Hul It got me thinking about some of the common electrical components we use to make bots and how they might be configured differently to create a spin art machine. So I tinkered with a few materials and came up with this design that’s easy for older kids to make themselves. What I need is a 1-2 watt solar panel that is as small as possible and has a voltage regulator attached to it or built into it.I mentioned that spin art has been around since the 60s. Did you know that it can be seen in the works of many contemporary artists? Chipboard - The size of the chipboard sheets depends on the size of the cardboard base cutout above. Use small chipboard sheets from Michaels or other craft store. The kids have been obsessed with this spin painter! They pretty much haven’t stopped making spin art since it arrived on our doorstep. They especially loved watching the entire spin painting process through the transparent lid. If you prefer not to solder the connections, you may instead use 22 gauge wire connectors. You will need three connectors per student. Box Fan - any size (16", 20", etc) : http://www.walmart.com/ip/Galaxy-20-Box-Fan-4733/10553592?findingMethod=rr
