Should be stiff Today we will learn how to build a mini electric spin art machine and then use it to make colorful art! Giant spin art has been fun to do with friends. We usually spin 20″ round canvases, but sometimes try larger ones. Our record size so far is 4’×3′. Surprisingly, just about every canvas comes out great. Once you have the motor turning, add a switch to the circuit. You may have to re-arrange the circuit and you will need to use alligator clips to connect everything. Can you make the motor spin when you flip the switch on? Can you make the motor stop after a little while when you flip the switch off?"

In fact when our classes were in session last year before the pandemic we challenged our afterschool students to make these and then we set them up for a school wide event! Even though we definitely had some ups and downs (hobby motors aren’t really supposed to last hours on end) it was a fun way to showcase our students’ work and to have a fun art based activity for kids to try. I’ll share more about how I set it up in this capacity later in the post. How to Make a Spin Art Machine Materials I first read about making a spin art machine in one of my favorite books for makers: Tinkering by Kurt Gabrielson. We have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t like spin painting, and if you haven’t tried it yet, we highly recommend giving it a try whether with a salad spinner or a machine.
