About this deal

Now, our protagonist is a women in her 40’s and this read revolves around her, though it does have a few short chapters from two other perspectives. Her personality is pieced together so well and at a perfect pace! Her emotions were captured perfectly and I loved the ending she got. So many interesting characters they each added to the storyline and just when I thought that I knew who it was it wasn't. I read the Serial Killer’s Wife first and assumed this book was a continuation. But it’s a different story unrelated. The author said, it does continue the theme of a murderer within the family and the effects this has on a particular member. The way Alice Hunter wrote the story was just amazing and very compelling. I was really rooting for Jenny but also felt she had her hand in the play of events. The story was written from three POV Jenny, Mark (Jenny’s) husband & young Jenny, this gave you a really insight to Jenny and her life both past and present.

This has a good plot and is a great idea but is a little slow, even dragging in some places, and was a little underwhelming. I enjoyed the alternating point of view between Jenny and Mark, which works well. The opening chapter draws you in brilliantly as well. Both Jenny and Mark are hiding significant things, added to the extracts from Paul Slater’s story brings an extra element which will give you plenty of questions as well as the chills. You’re going to be late, Jen,’ Mark says, his tone gentle. He can probably sense something isn’t right. That, or he’s found my discarded wedding ring and is worried it’s happening again. The memory of the last time I slipped my ring from my finger and hurled it at Mark is still fresh in my mind. I cringe as I recall the stream of expletives and insults that flew from my mouth. It wasn’t my finest moment. And it’s because our alarms didn’t go off this morning, we’re running late and Daddy has to be in work by nine-thirty.’ I’m thankful Alfie has at least quietly climbed into his own booster seat and has secured his seatbelt without me having to ask or help. ‘Good boy, Alfie,’ I say, shooting Ella a ‘see – your six-year-old brother is better behaved than you’ glare. There is no doubt that I loved this book. I cannot wait to lose myself in the author’s other book very soon. It gets a little confusing trying to figure who is talking to her dad in prison. But then you realize it’s someone trying to frame her. A victims family member perhaps? Oh no it’s someone much closer. In a sleepy Devon village, a young girl is taken from the streets, Local vet, Jenny, is horrified. This kind of thing doesn't happen here. But it's not the first time She's been so close to a crime scene. The daughter of a prolific serial killer, she's spent her whole life from running from who she really is. And the crime is harrowingly similar to those her father committed all those years ago.... I look at the closed door, half afraid of what I’m going to be faced with when she opens it. Then the squealing noises from downstairs remind me that I must hurry the morning routine along. I leave the bedroom and head to the kitchen, relieved at the excuse to put off confronting the reason Jen is avoiding me. Chapter 3 JENNY

Why isn’t Daddy taking us?’ Ella asks as she pulls her booster seat from the rear of the car and positions it in the passenger side of my Volvo estate. Morning, Jen – thank God. I was beginning to worry.’ Hayley scoots her chair out from the reception desk and stands, reaching over the counter to pass me a piece of paper. ‘These are the early morning animals in for surgery. Nisha has done the preliminaries; Vanessa is organising the operating room and I’ve booked them in.’ Her voice is clipped.Just like The Serial Killer's wife I had difficulty doing anything other than reading this book once I had started it! This is a fast paced, dark and gritty story that grips the reader’s attention. It was a whirlwind of chaos, twists and turns. Whilst I really enjoyed it and was gripped throughout, the ending disappointed me as I saw the culprit coming from a mile off. I am rarely one to nail the perpetrator, and particularly from an early stage of the book, so this one didn't have the wow ending of the first book. It was, what I term, an easy read. I finished it in 2 days. It was a pleasure to read. My list of preferred authors now gathering new names.
