About this deal

Anyway thanks everyone for the files and suggestions - small people had a couple of fun afternoons in their last week of home schooling (for now) as did I. Oars: Longships had between 24 and 50 oars, depending on their size. They could be pulled inside through the oar-port in shallow waters. The end result is an amazing longship model which is perfect for your classroom display, enhancing children’s learning about the Vikings by bringing it to life! Sail: Each ship had a big, brightly coloured square sail which was woven from wool. They were dyed red and had stripes or diamond patterns. The Viking longboat small from OMH is a beautifully crafted model of a classic Viking longship. This model measures 15x9x13 inches and is made with great attention to detail, showcasing the intricate design and construction of these ancient vessels.

Our Viking resources and activities can really help you engage your children in KS2 history lessons. Take a look at this Interactive Comprehension Activity. The Vikings used longboats as their method of transportation because they were fast, durable and capable of navigating through stormy seas and shallow rivers. If you're feeling inspired about Viking longships and are after some KS2-friendly teaching resources, then look no further. The shallow draft (distance between the water and the lowest point of the vessel) meant that longships could navigate through shallow waters with a depth of just 1 metre. This allowed the Vikings to land on beaches before jumping out to fight.

Prow: The prow (at the front of the ship) was often decorated with a skilfully carved dragon or snake head to make people fearful. The Viking longboat was a key part of Viking culture and played an important role in their history. These boats were designed for speed and maneuverability, with sleek, slender shapes and shallow drafts that allowed them to navigate the shallow waters of rivers and estuaries. In good weather conditions, it's thought that longships could reach speeds of up to 17 knots (though this varied from ship to ship). Having made that and understood the concept she wanted to do a more solid version and make it into a "longship". One of the most famous Viking sailing chants was carved into a piece of wood during the 14th century. The carving consists of the first few bars of the song and was known as "I Dreamt Me A Dream". Facts about Longships On board were a series of small rowing boats which meant that the Vikings could get to shore and explore without risking damage to the bigger ship. Did you know… In Viking times, ships were so important that the chiefs and the richest nobles were either burned or buried with their ship.
