Underneath that genial, likeable manner is an impressive amount of sonic prowess for a product of this type. There are no harsh edges to that smooth treble; there is ample headroom for higher notes to soar as well. For what is a fairly compact unit, the sound that emanates from the R2 Mk4 is surprisingly big and spacious, and it can reach decently loud volumes without getting too strained or losing composure. Even more importantly, the musical cohesion of a song remains intact and a compelling listen even at lower volumes. Unsurprisingly, fantastic. It has the same strengths as the R1S – it’s lively, warm and articulate with impressive texture and detail – but on a larger scale. Whether you’re listening to UK DAB+ stations or internet radio elsewhere, it’s hard to quibble with the tone or the dynamics, and it even handles complex, classical music and opera with finesse. Meanwhile, Radio 4 news and factual programmes or dramas have plenty of weight. We found that the extra space on the display is particularly useful when it comes to navigating through digital menus.

Everything the business has learned in over 15 years of development appears in this compelling piece of kit. Configuring everything from the moment you get your new equipment is a breeze, and navigating 16,000 available radio stations couldn’t be simpler. This device is excellent for anyone who wants the best of both worlds – vintage style combined with cutting-edge performance. It’s an app that’s easy to traverse, and like BoomBocs, it’s the method of control I use the most given how easy it is to search via the app (though annoyingly the app never remembers any search previously conducted). I do find that there are a few too many spinning circles during navigation, which suggests it could be more responsive.
Revo Radio is a slightly newer brand in the broadcasting market, founded by Colin Urie and David Baxter in 2004. The R2 has that naturally rich, weighty and expressive sound signature that we’ve come to know and love from Ruark’s previous products. Radio stations come through clear and punchy, and the R2 has a full-bodied approach that makes even the lower-quality digital stations pleasant to listen to. This service means you can play anything from Spotify’s astronomical library of songs and enjoy all the benefits of Revo sound quality too.Bass is the most qualified aspect of the Revo’s performance. Yes, there’s heft and power to the lower frequencies, but the balance seems off, especially in its radio mode. With Sparks’ This Town Ain’t Big Enough For the Both of Us or Betty Davis’ They Say I’m Different, the bass hogs the limelight and doesn’t sound well-formed, leading the midrange and treble sounding slightly recessed as a result.
Speaking of controlling your new kit, the OLED display also dims when you’re not using it so that you won’t be distracted by extra lighting in your bedroom at night. Revo SuperConnect is a table-top radio with DAB/DAB+ and FM tuners plus internet radio through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth wireless streaming, Spotify support, multi-room capability, dual alarms, multiple connectivity and operation by either an on-device control knob, a remote control or from a phone or tablet using the UNDOK app. This is a truly beautiful piece of machinery that perfectly embodies the retro hi-fi feel you might have had 20 or 30 years ago.
That hasn't, thankfully, quite happened; there is still a great demand for the classic radio - although modern versions are required to offer a more wide-ranging list of tasks and functions. You get two alarms, which seems to be par for the course with radios these days. You can set them daily, once, on weekdays or for the weekend. The alarms can be programmed to alert the user with a buzzer sound, Internet Radio, DAB+, or FM.It’s a likeable presentation from the get-go. Play better quality stations or stream songs from your favourite music app, and you’ll get solidity, detail and dynamic expression in spades. Yes, the R2 is a shade on the warm side of neutral, but never so far as to colour the natural tone and feeling of the songs we play, regardless of genre. The SuperConnect comes with excellent functionality built-in, regardless of whether you’re looking for FM with RDS, DAB, and DAB+, or internet radio. Ultimately, there’s no limit to what you can listen to.
