Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Following the success and stress of Ether Song, the band took a short break, but not before touring Australia and New Zealand and releasing a DJ mix album for Azuli Records' Late Night Tales series in February 2004. The mix album (2004) was a collection of some of their favourite songs and main influences, and also contained The Rolling Stones song "Moonlight Mile" as a cover. The band have done some DJ sets in the London area over the years.

Turin Brakes have always been an unstarry proposition, even as the harmonies of founder members Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian reach for the heavens. Emerging from the New Acoustic Movement of the early 2000s, and peaking commercially with their 2003 UK top 5 hit Painkiller (Summer Rain), they’re a modest band, committed to the music and the songcraft. It’s no coincidence one of their lyrics goes, “Have another drink my son/Enjoy another cigarette/’Cos it’s time you realised/You’re just an average man.” The ARIA Report: New Releases Singles – Week Commencing 31st March 2003" (PDF). Knights shares that festival crowds require a switching into a different mindset when compared to people coming to see them specifically at their shows: That meant I was hearing all this wobbly synth music for the first time in years in the house, and the new record definitely has some wobbly synths on it. I love that because it keeps things fresh.Their big break wouldn’t come until 2003, when their single Pain Killer (Summer Rain) became their biggest hit to date, reaching number five in the UK singles chart. Pain Killer" (also titled " Pain Killer (Summer Rain)") is a song written by Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, produced by Tony Hoffer, and recorded by British band Turin Brakes. It was included on Turin Brakes' second album, Ether Song (2003), and was released as the second single from the album in February 2003. The song debuted at its peak of number five on the UK Singles Chart, at which point the single's formats were deleted. [1] Outside the United Kingdom, the song charted in Italy and the Netherlands at numbers 50 and 64, respectively. All I can say is, it's like catching a gentle wave, and then it speeds everything up. You feel this force that's bigger than you, pushing you along for a while. Being in a band is bloody hard work. Most of the time you’re having to get up and drive it yourself, and when something else drives it for a while, it's just lovely. Like surfing a wave, you've got to enjoy that feeling when it's happening. In 2014, the band played the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas and toured the United Kingdom, Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands. In 2015, the band started work on their seventh studio album. Watch: New Singing Lesson Videos Can Make Anyone A Great Singer Batter up the hatches Here comes a cold We've had a few moments like that on American TV shows, and that was one of the best ones. It was on such a big scene and it was really heavily used. You could see that the filmmakers and the people behind that show really seemed to get it and appreciated that song.

Knights says they surprised themselves with what came out: a “sweeter, groovier” set of songs in no hurry to be anything but themselves. Turin Brakes' second album, Ether Song, was released on 3 March 2003. The album was a departure from the acoustic sound that had brought them success with their first album. The album was popular enough to reach number 4 in the UK Albums Chart upon its release [10] and to be certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry four days after the release, on 7 March 2003. a b Pain Killer (UK CD single liner notes). Early 2002, the band started work on their second album. After demo sessions in Rye, United Kingdom, the band flew to Los Angeles, California to record with producer Tony Hoffer in the Summer of 2002. In October 2002, this resulted in single Long Distance (reaching no. 31 [7] ) and an arena tour supporting David Gray. Because festivals and touring went away for a while, what we've noticed is there's more positive feeling from the crowd. Bands appreciate playing at the moment more than they ever did, because it looked like it might never happen again for a while – as absurd as that sounds. So festivals feel really magical and more important than they did before, and long may it last.”

In March 2009, the band announced they would make their live return later in the year with two acoustic shows at Folk in the Barn in Canterbury in May. In June 2009, it was announced that the band would be releasing a 'Best Of' album, to mark the tenth anniversary of their debut single "The Door", along with a festival slot at Latitude in late-July and a headline performance at London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane the following September. [17] This album, Bottled at Source – The Best of the Source Years, was also their last album for the Source record label. Turin Brakes are currently on their UK tour until the end of October, and performed for the first time at Towersey Festival this summer, the UK’s longest-running independent festival. During the performance at Theatre Royal on 13 September, the band played brand-new songs off the untitled forthcoming album, which they hinted would come out in February 2010. UK limited-edition 7-inch single [3] A. "Pain Killer" (radio edit) B. "Little Brother" (demo version) The band spent the first half of 2006 writing new songs, occasionally performing both new and old work at small gigs across the UK. The band did an intimate tour in November 2006 to try out new material. In January 2007 the band entered a recording studio in London to record their fourth album with producer Ethan Johns. After three weeks the band took a break (on 29 January Paridjanian's wife gave birth to a daughter), but the sessions were resumed several weeks later in a bigger studio (also in London). On the last day of March 2007 the band announced that they had finished the recording sessions, and recorded 17 songs.

The album's commercial performance created some tension between the band and their label. In fact, between tours in the United States (their own headline tour and supporting David Gray) in the Summer of 2003, the band recorded a new single for a re-release of Ether Song with Tony Hoffer. The first re-release of Ether Song, featuring an orange version of the cover and single 5 Mile was released on 6 October 2003. 5 Mile charted higher than Average Man (no. 31 [12]) but was largely overlooked by UK radio stations. Overall, the album was re-released four times during its lifespan, [13] and received various bonus discs between regions and versions. The band was on record as being unhappy with the way the record company was treating them and the fans regarding the release. Of Wide-Eyed Nowhere the band say: "We surprised ourselves with what came out; a sweeter, groovier set of songs in no hurry to be anything but themselves."'" The South London 4-Piece comprising Olly Knights, Gale Paridjanian, Rob Allum and Eddie Myer recorded this new set of songs at Twin Palms - Olly's garden studio - over the summer of 2021, choosing to let time infuse into the music and mature in a way it couldn't in a pressurised commercial studio setting. Turin Brakes are an English band, comprising original duo of Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, and long-term collaborators Rob Allum and Eddie Myer. They had a UK top 5 hit in 2003 with their song " Painkiller (Summer Rain)". Since starting out in 1999, the band have sold around one million records worldwide.
