About this deal

Fungus gnats are called “fungus” gnats because they feed on fungi growing in your soil or potting mix. Adult fungus gnats are harmless, but the larvae in the potting mix, if present in large numbers, can damage roots, particularly in younger plants. CONTROL CULTURAL CONDITIONS TEMPERATURE Adult female fungus gnats lay their eggs in organic, moisture-rich environments like potting mix, which hatch into larvae in a matter of days at room temperature. In addition to feeding on fungi and organic matter in potting soil, these larvae might also chow down on houseplants’ roots. Within two weeks, they develop into pupae and finally adult fungus gnats, at which point they emerge from the soil to begin the cycle of egg-laying anew. What do fungus gnats look like? Use a powder duster to spread food-grade diatomaceous earth overexposed parts of soil. This will help kill the fungus gnat larvae and will also help prevent infestations in the future. While not completely necessary, adding diatomaceous earth is a great step to take to help get rid of the fungus gnats and their larvae as fast as possibleDiatomaceous earth is an organic insect killer made of fossilized shells. It is sharp on the microscopic level and works by puncturing the exoskeleton of insects (draining them of their body fluids), but poses no harm to humans or pets and can even be eaten. After fizzing for about 30 seconds, hydrogen peroxide will break down into oxygen and water, both of which are harmless to your plants

Let the potting soil dry out between plant waterings. This will help control fungus gnats. But sometimes more aggressive measures are needed to kill these insect pests. Fortunately, there are now natural, non-chemical ways to naturally kill fungus gnats and control fungus gnat infestations. Kill Fungus Gnats Naturally– Control Larvae with BTI This video shows you what fungus gnats look like, and also go over how to get rid of them (or just read the rest of the article!) The next time you water a plant infested with fungus gnats, test out a hydrogen peroxide solution. While hydrogen peroxide might not be as effective as other suggestions on this list, it’s worth a shot since it’s probably already in your medicine cabinet! And while you can use a hydrogen peroxide solution as a spray on stems and leaves, it’ll work better in the growing medium because this is where eggs typically hatch. Fungus gnats (Family Sciaridae) are insects commonly associated with overwatered houseplants. They can become a nuisance when they are present in large numbers and fly around inside a home. In most situations, fungus gnats are a cosmetic problem. However, on occasion, fungus gnat larvae can cause plant damage. A fungus gnat adult. Note the Y-shaped wing veins (arrow). Schoenmakers (Waarneming.nl) Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, is used in a popular product called Mosquito Bits, which, in spite of its name, will also help you get rid of fungus gnats. Bt is essentially a bacteria that kills fungus gnats but is considered safe for humans and pets. Mosquito pellets are very effective, as they systematically kill larvae in the soil.

Larvae are tiny when hatched and can grow to 5.5 mm in length Lifespan

The adult fungus gnat flies are just annoying (and gross); they don’t bite you and don’t do much to hurt your plants directly besides spreading disease. But even though the mature fungus gnats aren’t a huge threat to your plants, the presence of adult gnats lets you know that your cannabis soil has been infested with their maggot offspring which causes the real problems.

You also want to control the ever-growing population of larvae that are feasting on your plants’ soil and roots (and eventually becoming those annoying adults). Fungus gnats love rich, damp soils and complete their lifecycle in about three weeks, with females laying between 100-300 eggs at once. It’s possible your plant may be hosting overlapping generations of gnats, so swift control is needed to stop serious infestations.
