About this deal

With that setup and 2k litres available I didn’t run out of water (down to 200-ish litres) during the 3 weeks of hot weather even with soaker hoses in my beans and squashes trenches which were turned on for 5 minutes a day.

If you don’t have a solar panel system that’s big enough to generate the power needed to run your water pump, then you’re bound to run into some problems. This is especially true if you are using solar panels to run a larger, more powerful pump for larger volumes of water flow. You will need to make sure you can generate enough wattage for the job.

There are challenges with this approach. The most difficult to overcome is the weight of the water. One litre of water weighs 1 kilogram, or 2.2 pounds, so a full 1000 litre IBC weighs over a tonne, including the weight of the IBC itself. This helped me identify a suitably sized solar panel that could provide electrical energy to store in a leisure battery. To choose the right battery, I got advice from a retailer, but in general a leisure battery (rather than a car battery) is suitable for use with solar panels, with the requirement of constantly charging and discharging, and the type of power they provide. Leisure batteries are a little more expensive than a car battery. As this will pump water out to 25m, that is ideal as each of the 4 plots is 25m long x 5m wide. So with just 50m of hose pipe and a few empty barrels I can effectively move water from the top of both plots down to the bottom plots.

This is a smaller water pump, so it’s perfect for bird baths, fish tanks, small ponds and improving water circulation. In addition, it’s super easy to install and AISITIN includes detailed instructions for setting up your pump.

Crucially, the battery provides a big enough energy output, or watts, to satisfy the minimum requirements of the pump. Firstly they decided to install two strip concrete footings as their ground is unstable at certain times of the year. Next they constructed a timber frame to support the Perspex sheeting. This sloped down to a standard gutter system to supply the storage tanks below. The posts are seated in standard Drive-in Post Anchors. Important
