a b Kinane, Ruth (May 10, 2019). " 'You' book series expanding with two more novels from author Caroline Kepnes". Entertainment Weekly. Archived from the original on May 10, 2019 . Retrieved May 10, 2019. That night, Mary Kay gets drunk, and they kiss after Joe follows her into the bathroom. Joe tries to push things further, but Mary Kay breaks away and leaves.

Kepnes’s savage takedowns of pretentious blowhards continue to make Joe a more culturally aware Dexter, or perhaps a more romantic and humorous Hannibal, as he pillories the bad taste of his rivals and victims.” –LITERARY HUB He gets a job at the local library--he does know a thing or two about books--and that's where he meets her: Mary Kaye DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won't meddle, he will not obsess. He'll win her the old fashioned way . . . by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand. Over time, they'll both heal their wounds and begin their happily ever after in this sleepy town. If you weren’t into the previous books and/or didn’t like the show, I have bad news for you. This book is not going to change your mind. You will not like it. Fingers crossed, hopefully this time it will work with the stunning Mary Kay. If Joe can just be patient (not his strong suit) perhaps she’ll come around. She must know they were meant to be. Destiny. And nothing can stop Joe…this time! He gets a job at the local library–he does know a thing or two about books–and that’s where he meets her: Mary Kay DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won’t meddle, he will not obsess. He’ll win her the old fashioned way . . . by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand. Over time, they’ll both heal their wounds and begin their happily ever after in this sleepy town. However, I was still entertained. Joe is Joe. He’s a character we love to hate and I couldn’t resist seeing what he was up to. MK was meh for me. I didn’t warm to her as much as I would have liked. I was both surprised and not surprised by the ending. Joe is now living on Bainbridge Island and has his eye on his new boss, Mary Kay DiMarco, a librarian at Bainbridge Public Library who has dreams of owning her own bookstore some day. She has a teenaged daughter, Noni. With his new start, Joe is determined to resist his impulses, and he promises himself he will not kill for Mary Kay. Joe and Mary Kay become closer. They finally kiss, but Mary Kay says she just wants to be friends. Still, Joe continues to build up a relationship in his head. Then, one day, he finds out Mary Kay is married. Joe chides himself for trying to be a "good guy" and not properly stalking her. Kepnes published another sequel, For You and You Only, in 2023. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Synopsis [ edit ] They started going for walks, gradually increasing the distance, and Reuben saw a therapist, who joined their Covid bubble. “She came to the house once a week and started helping Reuben on the physical recovery as well, because he had muscle wastage and was really weak as he hadn’t gone anywhere for months,” says Manni. “And she started working on his expression.”

a b Caroline Kepnes (2016). Hidden Bodies: A Novel. Simon and Schuster. ISBN 978-1-4767-8563-9. Archived from the original on 2019-01-23 . Retrieved 2019-01-22. Nomi talks about the times Joe was watching her and she caught him, not realizing that Joe had been stalking Mary Kay. Joe keeps trying to convince her that she has misinterpreted things, but Nomi ignores him. He tells her firmly that what Seamus did was wrong, he does not love her and that she does not love him. But Mary Kay walks in as he has her hands on Nomi’s shoulders. As the story opens, Joe’s been transported into the suburbs, living in Bainbridge Island in Washington. His child has been born, and he’s spent the last few months in jail while being held for trial from his crimes. He was released thanks to fancy lawyers paid for by the Quinn family, but they also offered him a non-voluntary payoff (as in, take it or get shot) to stay away from Love and his son. Reading Joe's thoughts is almost like reading poetry...written by a psychopath who at the same time often comes across as the decent, well-intentioned man we all sort of WANT him to be...while simultaneously hoping he gets tripped up over and over again. The twisted love-hate relationship the reader has with Joe plays on ALL of your emotions, and I get snagged hook, line, and sinker, every time. While the characters in Hidden Bodies and the overall plot wasn't my favorite, I felt the setting and these characters not only captured my attention, but reminded me of why I fell in love with this series in the first place. Having Penn Badgley's voice in my head while reading only enhances this experience, and I can't think of a better Joe Goldberg to haunt my dreams...or at least to leave me desperate for more! Trying to leave the past behind him, Joe Goldberg moves from New York City to a small island town, hoping that a quaint and quiet life will be just what he needs to start over. Joe buys a house and even volunteers at the library, and then he meets HER; his boss at the library, Mary Kaye DiMarco. Joe knows at first sight that he and Mary Kaye are meant to be and he finally sees a positive and fruitful future for himself, with Mary Kaye as his partner. Mary Kaye, however, has a teenage daughter and a famous husband, and she doesn’t seem willing to leave either of them behind to start over with Joe. Joe knows that it is his responsibility to help Mary Kaye see how much better her life would be with Joe in it, and he will stop at nothing to make that happen.

I felt as if I was visiting him 40 years in the future and seeing him as an old man in a retirement home. He needed to hang on to me to walk, but we weren’t allowed to touch. Reasons I hate Mary Kay: she's married. And hid that from Joe. He should have been like OKAY MOVING ON. This bitch is nothing special. She's a liar, she's married, let me find a new conquest. But no. He perseveres for this bitch because... why? She has a daughter? He wants a family? So what. The text was not a question, says Manni, it was a prompt. “That was Reuben’s way of saying ‘come and get me out of here. If you love me then show me the colour of your love’. Is that what you meant Reubs?” Reuben raises his finger in agreement. The colour of their love is probably a red rainbow, he says. If you’re following the show, you’ll remember that Season 2 ends with Joe moving out to the suburbs with his equally psychotic girlfriend, Love. He talks about wanting to start a family, etc.Since this book won't be released for another month or so, this is as far as I'm willing to go with any plot details but I will say that this is the perfect third book for the series. Joe has aged. He's grown. He thinks he knows more about what he's looking for in terms of settling down with the right woman and it is ridiculously hysterical to be inside his head and listen to all the ways he convinces himself that he's really turned over a new leaf. His interactions with secondary characters are beyond entertaining. I loved all the colorful people Kepnes brought into Joe's life. As an extra bonus, living just a stone's throw from where the book is set was a delight-I knew the town and all the places mentioned--so fun. So, rather than say, “Put your arm around me and let’s go for a walk”, Manni will say to Reuben, “Put your hand on my mane and let’s walk a while together”. Then, along comes YOU LOVE ME. Up to this point, Joe has been infatuated with extremely flawed women that are not exactly "good" people. Not that any of them deserve the emotional gaslighting (and worse things) that Joe unleashes on the people he chooses to "love" but the women are not likable/relatable (to me, in my opinion). I don't see myself in the choices they make, the way they respond to certain situations, and ultimately, the danger they put themselves in. Kepnes’ series continues to be a sly, subversive exploration of what people choose to reveal and what they hide in their relationships, and just how difficult it is to truly know another person. That Kepnes manages to limn such heady subjects in such a compulsively readable way while serving up twists aplenty is the reason the series still feels fresh three books in. With the Netflix show, You, based on Joe’s exploits and set to return for a third season, there’s never been a better time to get acquainted with Kepnes’ dangerously appealing leading man.” –BOOKLIST (starred review) This book is remarkable. At it's heart, it's a story of two brothers and the friends and family that surround them. Of Manni and Reuben. Reubs has Downs Syndrome, and during covid he was living in a home for adults with learning disabilities. The care system was letting him down - importantly the system, not those tirelessly working within it - and he sent Manni, then living in Spain, an SOS text - 'brother. do. you. love. me.'

Joe text Mary Kay from Melanda’s phone and pretends to run into her at the salon where Mary Kay says she’s going. Joe pushes her to get a drink with him. Mary Kay says that there’s something “off” about Melanda suddenly planning on leaving town. When Joe tries to convince her to get something to eat too, Mary Kay finally admits that she’s married. She says she has no intention of leaving her husband or cheating on him. She apologizes for leading him on, but says that she has a family. But she also says she never imagined she’d meet someone like Joe. At work, Mary Kay acts normal. Curious, Joe goes to her house while no one is home and sets up a bunch of cameras. He also sees that the whole house is covered in 90’s memorabilia (which is when Phil was at the height of his fame). That night, he watches as Mary Kay confronts Phil about his affair with Melanda. Phil weeps and apologies, and Mary Kay seems ready to forgive him. Then, Mary Kay hints that she has strayed as well, and Phil gets angry and it blows up into a huge fight. But when they’re done screaming they have sex and talk about meeting with the marriage counselor the next day. Joes makes a note of her name: Layla Twitchell. I won't be recommending this one. Hopefully the screenwriters for the show are able to salvage this mess. When Reuben was in the care home, Manni – whose loving zeal is reminiscent of parenthood – decorated his brother’s room with a “huge wallpaper mural of a lion” bought online. And his empathy for Reuben’s outlook is striking. At the wedding, Nomi dances with Joe and puts her fingers in his hair, but he pulls away. He recognizes that something is off. Afterwards, Joe recognizes that Nomi is clearly struggling with confused feelings about the father figures in her life (i.e. “daddy issues”), and that he needs to stay away from her and avoids being alone with her.

Joe is determined not to kill anymore (too complicated!), but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some twisted ideas up his sleeve. With inventive new mind games to play and deranged schemes to enact, Joe still manages to get himself into plenty of trouble, even as he tries to be a “good guy” and act however he thinks “good guys” act (hint: he’s still not a good guy, but he’s certainly entertaining).
