About this deal

Requiem of the Rose King was written and illustrated by Aya Kanno. It was serialized in Akita Shoten's shōjo (girls') manga magazine Monthly Princess, starting in the magazine's November 2013 issue on 4 October 2013. [12] [13] On 4 June 2021, Kanno announced that she had completed the storyboard for the final Requiem of the Rose King chapter. [14] On 6 October 2021, Monthly Princess revealed that the series would end in four chapters. [15] Requiem of the Rose King concluded in the magazine's February 2022 issue on 6 January 2022. [16] [17] Akita Shoten collects the series' individual chapters into tankōbon (bound volumes) published under their Princess Comics imprint; the 17th and final volume will be released in Japan on 16 June 2022. This isn't going to be every Ricardian's cuppa tea, but if you are willing to take a chance on it, I think you might end up liking it.

First of all, I had read the Raws up to chapter 21, so this comment is based on my knowledge of the book till chapter 21. As the show's title suggests, Baraou no Souretsu a.k.a Requiem of the Rose King takes place in the trying times known as the War of the Roses (or the Civil War), and being heavily inspired off of the Shakespearean plays should give you an idea of what to expect. THe only difference in this show, is by following the main character: the House of York's Richard III, deviated into an intersex version of himself that's fighting his own "questionable" descent, where hateful despise from his mother, extreme adoration from his father, alienation from the surrounding people, grappling with the haunting and taunting of frightful spirits, unsteady and unintentional alliances with frenemies, above all, this is his story of own passion fighting for a throne, that is the throne of the King of England.Bara ou no Sorestsu is a strange reinterpretation of the story of Richard III, loosely inspired by Shakespeare's plays Henry VI parts 1 - 3 and Richard III. (Not sure what it means in the official summary "Based on an early draft of Shakespeare's play." What early draft? I don't think anything like that exists.) It begins when Richard is a child, rejected by his mother as he was born intersex. (I choose to refer to Richard as "he" as he seems to identify as male most of the time) Richard has a great "father-daughter" relationship with his father, whom he adores, but is troubled by visions of Joan of Arc, who represents his feminine nature. a b c d e f g h i j k Pineda, Rafael Antonio (4 October 2021). Richard is both male and female, which by itself would be hard enough to deal with. He is also haunted by supernatural beings (something I forgot to mention in my review of volume 1), particularly the spirit of Joan of Arc, who is much sexier looking than I’m sure the real Joan ever looked. And though not dark, there is Richard’s white boar, a real animal that is part pet, part heraldic emblem, that shows up from time to time.

Requiem of the Rose King was one of my most anticipated manga of 2015, and it lived up to my expectations. Based on an early draft of Shakespear's Richard 3, this manga follows the tragic tale of a character named Richard, born into the world an intersex person. Richard is born with both the body of a male and a female, and for this reason, his mother cannot bear to look at him. It would not be an exaggeration to even say she fears and hates Richard, for she purposely abandoned him in the woods where witches are rumored to reside and accuses him of basically being demon spawn. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL SHOUJO. THIS IS DARK AND GRUESOME AND VERY DIFFERENT. What's completely thrown me are the liberties that Kanno has taken with the characters and historical inspiration. I mean, first off, Kanno decided to swap the physical deformity of Shakespeare's Richard III to him now being intersex (!?!?) and Joan of Arc is a character, but she's now a spirit who haunts Richard. UMMM?? Also in this book, we meet Elizabeth Woodville. When she shows up portraying herself as the impoverished widow of a Lancastrian knight with two young boys, Edward is captivated. What he doesn’t know is that Elizabeth has ulterior motives; she wants to snag Edward so she can have her revenge upon him. Richard and Henry have another encounter and spend a rainy weekend together in a hunting lodge, neither yet realizing who the other really is. Because Henry, who is happy no longer being king of England is wandering around the countryside presenting himself as a common shepherd. a b Hodgkins, Crystalyn (6 December 2020). Mostly it comes across as strange prophetic dreams and psychic links between characters. Still its wildly out of place and not so much mysterious as it is confusing. Another interesting turn is that Catesby is loyal to Richard is his biggest friend and support their relationship is actually very sweet, and to me he represented that people who loved and supported the real Richard. I am not a regular reader of manga, but as this series has to do with Richard III, I figured I would give it a try. The story line is very loosely based on Shakespeare’s plays Henry VI, Part 3 and Richard III. And if you think the Bard plays fast and loose with historical facts, wait until you read this. There's only two ways to approach this manga: you either cleanse your mind of any expectations or demands of historicity, accuracy and plausibility, not to mention a good dose of suspension of disbelief, or you simply don't read it at all. However, the second occasion is uncomfortable. Richard is captured by the enemy and is assaulted. His shirt is cut open revealing his chest. In this scene, Richard is drawn in...what I can only describe as a wistful, pretty, anime boy kind of style. And given the context of this scene, it feels out of place. My fear while reading this series is that the author, Kanno is attempting to romanticize and sexualize Richard’s dysphoria and his body in a way that is supposed to appeal to and titillate an audience. I’m not saying that this IS the intention, but it is something I’m concerned about while reading. Who is this story meant for? Does this story have good intentions? Or is this just written out of some morbid curiosity and fetishization? Is this story good representation? I don’t know. I haven’t read enough of it to know. And honestly, on some of those questions my opinion is irrelevant. I am far more interested in hearing from the LGBT and Intersex community on the subject. Loo, Egan (9 December 2014). Un increíble tomo que, aunque no ha habido ni guerras ni batallas físicas, sí que ha habido posicionamientos y estrategias políticas.I also wonder if the mangaka knows that there is a difference between being intersex and transgender. A person can be intersex and transgender, but these two terminologies are not interchangeable and are not the same thing. I’m wondering how knowledgeable this author is and how much care has gone into writing this complex story. Dempsey, Liam (6 January 2022). There’s a lot of action in this book with plenty of battles as York defeats Lancaster. It is during this time that Richard’s hatred for the Lancasters grows when he learns of his beloved father’s death. Following success on the battlefield, the late Duke of York’s oldest son becomes Edward IV, who showers affection on his two younger brothers, giving them royal dukedoms and encouraging them to seek out the pleasures of women. This isn’t enough for young Richard, who remains bitter over the loss of his father. Even the interest of Anne Neville isn’t enough to take his mind off of his dark thoughts.
