About this deal

Pendulin’s Shadowkeepers scheme can be found in a separate article – How to Paint Everything: Adeptus Custodes Shadowkeepers. Although their numbers were greatly reduced during the Battle of the Webway during the Horus Heresy, the Legio Custodes now once again numbers ten thousand warriors, each dedicated to the protection of Terra. Since the return of Roboute Guilliman and his ascension to the role of Imperial Regent, they have lifted their self-imposed Edict of Restraint and once again begun crusading across the Imperium to bring swift death to the foes of mankind. They played a pivotal role in Guilliman’s battle against Magnus and the Thousand Sons on Luna, and in the defense of the Imperial palace. Such is their might that the Administratum has never recorded a single loss for the a battle that the Custodes have participated in. Now comes the fun weathering and highlight stage. Using a bit of spare foam or sponge, I added silver chipping all over the model. To do this, I put some Stormhost Silver on my palette then dipped a section of the foam into it. Do a few practice dabs on some paper towels to make sure the right amount of paint is coming off. You don’t want to overload the model with this. Repeat step 3 but with Citadel XV -88 highlighting less of the armour. You want your highlights to be hitting the raised parts and points of interest.

Ribbons – Two layers of highlights, the first is Rakarth Flesh and a little white added, the second is just adding more white to the previous mix. None of that has anything to do with the quality of Citadel’s rattle cans: Retributor Armour spray dries beautifully. Even if I have to brush-prime the odd crevice and touch it up with a spot of paint, I’ve still saved a ton of time here. Look at their wee nameplates! It’s coarse enough that you can feel it when you run a finger over it, and it seems to absorb paint like no-one’s business. I’m not sure the reason behind that, but it’s a pain.I had a similar thing happen when I sprayed a load of primaris marines with Averland Sunset, but managed to scrape off the texture with some vigorous toothbrush action. More importantly, it means that my Retributors look like they’ve been coated in cheap Christmas glitter. Retributor Armour paint has all of these properties, which have impressed me enough to bother writing an entire article about it. It’s simply fantastic for gold metal bits on your miniatures. Long shadows cast on a game board in the late afternoon… The Allarus Terminators are fussier than the Custodian Guards, because their pauldrons are overhangs and their little turtle heads make a “dead zone” for paint unless you hit that area from just the right angle.

Spot Highlight the armor (gold and leadbelcher parts) with Stormhost Silver (try to ‘dot’ the edges of the armor only – less is more)!

I gave the eyes a coat of Aethermatic Blue . It’s okay to have this spill over a bit onto the helmet for a slight glow effect.Mix this in with your Retributor Armour if you want to airbrush it, or simply want it to flow a tad better off your brush.

Codex: Adeptus Custodes is full of insight into the Emperor’s glorious bananas, highlighting their nature, organization and secret wars, but if you want to read more, here are a few books we’d suggest that dive into greater detail on the Custodes. Compared to terrain, which, broadly, is flat and regular, miniatures are much fussier to spray paint. They’re covered in little nooks and crannies. Airbrush Vallejo Model Air Insignia White over the entire thing. You could also use your favorite off-white, I’m a fan of Insignia white as it’s very close and just a tiny bit warm. Highlight almost all the gold with Scale 75 Dwarven Gold, leaving the Necro Gold in just the recesses. Now we move onto the quartering – the Howling Griffons have a very distinct red and yellow quartered scheme. After enjoying the time savings from spraying my first batch of 40k terrain with Citadel’s Wraithbone rattle can — a primer and base coat in one — I decided to go the same route with my custard lads. They’re 90% gold; this is a potentially huge time savings. Gehenna’s Gold for a bright, metallic gold hue that contrasts well with the darker brown and lighter bone colors. And there you have it. Add any further small details you may want, but they’re all ready to go slay the enemies of the Emperor. I've been using the Scale 75 gold set for my Lizardman team and it works quite nicely. Sadly I can't post pictures but it does produce a pleasing gold colour. Airbrush a basecoat of a 1:1 mix of Vallejo metal color copper and Valejo metal color gold all over the model.
