About this deal

Seagate’s 500GB SSHD Thin drive at 7mm is a wallet-friendly alternative for users seeking new technology that provides low-power consumption, serious performance gains over conventional HDDs when in cache, and overall solid value per gigabyte.

In het volgende scherm wordt de licentieovereenkomst weergegeven. Als u akkoord gaat, klikt u op Ik ga akkoord en klikt u vervolgens op Volgende. In the File Server profile, the Seagate Gen3 offered substantially better performance than all of the competition from 8-64 IOPS at 3x-5x. However, at 128 IOPS, the Gen2 was tops. To a large extent, Seagate’s multi-tier cache determines the performance of the company’s BarraCuda 2.5" and Mobile HDD drives. For example, when Seagate announced its Mobile HDD products earlier this year, the company declared maximum sustainable transfer rate of the HDD at 100 MB/s. However, the documentation was altered later in the summer to reflect a maximum transfer rate of 140 MB/s (possibly due to updated firmware, or a change in the performance measurement method). Now, the high-capacity BarraCuda 2.5” (3 TB, 4 TB and 5 TB) drives are rated for 130 MB/s, while the mainstream BarraCuda 2.5” (500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB) are rated for 140 MB/s. This is still below the 145 – 169 MB/s offered by PMR-based Laptop HDDs from the company. Seagate BarraCuda 2.5" HDDs While not a bombshell, Seagate’s Gen3 model does provide cost-efficient performance and a significantly lower starting price than the Gen2 Momentus XT 750GB. Our benchmarking shows the Gen3 and Gen2 both outperform HDDs where it matters, in our real world traces where the onboard cache can really show its performance benefits. In that case, where data is nicely cached, the new 500GB Thin bests the 750GB Gen2 product by a significant margin.

Drive Managed, DM-SMR, which is opaque to the OS. This means ZFS cannot "target" writes, and is the worst type for ZFS use. As a rule of thumb, avoid DM-SMR drives, unless you have a specific use case where the increased resilver time (a week or longer) is acceptable, and you know the drive will function for ZFS during resilver. See (h) Seagate datasheet for 8TB Archive v2 showing HA-SMR: https://www.seagate.com/www-content...seagate-archive-hdd/en-us/docs/100795782a.pdf Experience the highest capacity, and the thinnest 2.5-inch hard drive you've ever seen. Choose from 500 GB to 2 TB of massive storage for all of your application and data needs along with a slim 7 mm form factor drive that makes system upgrades very easy. The next profile looks at a file server, with 80% read and 20% write workload spread out over multiple transfer sizes ranging from 512-byte to 64KB.

HGST Host-Managed SMR DataCenter drives: https://www.westerndigital.com/products/data-center-drives/ultrastar-dc-hc600-series-hdd Our Database profile again showed the Seagate Gen3 as a strong runner-up to the Gen2 plateauing at 64 IOPS, steady to 128. Looking from the front you can see the standard SATA power and data interface, as well as admire the thin 7mm form-factor. This design allows it to fit in more systems, including ultrathin notebooks. Rounding out the figures, in our Workstation profile, the Gen3 placed a solid second, again to the Gen2. The Gen3 plateaued at 64 IOPS and had a minor decrease at 128 IOPS. The irony here is that competitors are likely to use the same Seagate 5TB internal hard drive. The LaCie Porsche Design 5TB USB-C Mobile Hard Drive is far more expensive and doesn’t come with the Mylio Create software bundle. However, it has a more attractive finish and a Type-C connector. The table below presents the detailed specifications and miscellaneous aspects of the 2019 WD My Passport 5TB and how they compare against similar external drives currently in the market. The portable bus-powered external hard drive market is served by all three HDD vendors - Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba. Seagate has been making use of SMR in the recent past for this segment. Western Digital is known for being coy about divulging the technology used inside its consumer products. It turns out that WD has also been using SMR technology since last 2016 in its external hard drives. In response to our specific query, WD officially confirmed the use of SMR platters in the hard drive inside the WD My Passport 5TB 2019 edition. All hard drives in the BarraCuda family come equipped with Multi-Tier Caching Technology (MTC). MTC takes your PC to new performance levels, so you can load applications and files faster than ever before. By applying intelligent layers of NAND Flash, DRAM and media cache technologies, BarraCuda delivers improved read and write performance by optimising data flow.

Seagate platter sizes 2.5": https://rml527.blogspot.com/2010/09/hdd-platter-database-seagate-25.html With any laptop drive, power consumption is an important factor for users. The key sources of power draw get narrowed down to either the bright screen or the storage device used. In the next test, we record the average power consumed over a small range of synthetic benchmarks. For reference, Seagate lists an average idle power rate of 0.9 watts and an active seek rate of 2.5 watts. l) OpenZFS Office Hour discussion on SMR: 2015, SMR, Resilvering, Possible Solutions at around 20, 31 and 46 mins respectively, https://youtu.be/mS4bfbEq46I?t=1220 Seagate’s third generation SSHDs (solid state hybrid drives), now for both laptops and desktops, are marketed as a replacement for HDDs and serve as a good option for those otherwise considering an SSD. SSHDs aim to offer users the price-point and robust capacity of HDDs while also utilizing NAND flash to provide the performance attained with SSDs by caching critical applications. Slimmed from 9.5mm to 7mm, our review model third generation Seagate 500GB SSHD Thin with 8GB of MLC NAND would fit well in any user configuration and is especially well-suited for ultra-thin, ultra-light laptops.

While the vast majority of the Seagate BarraCuda 2.5" 4 TB HDDs will use a four-platter configuration, some Seagate customers have apparently requested a five-platter configuration. Obviously, being based on 800 GB platters, such drives have lower areal density and, perhaps, different performance and behavior. Host Aware, HA-SMR, which is designed to give ZFS insight into the SMR process. Note that ZFS code to use HA-SMR does not appear to exist. Without that code, a HA-SMR drive behaves like a DM-SMR drive where ZFS is concerned.
