Considered by some to be a superior watch to the Brietling Navitimer and available for under half the retail cost, the German ‘Sinn 903’ has a very interesting story behind it. When it comes to affordable watches, there are few brands that have the same respect as Seiko. The Seiko Flightmaster SNA411P1 is one of those watches. It is bold, sporty, technically advanced, and of course rather good-looking.
It also uses its bidirectional rotating bezel as the sliding rule (some watches has a rotating inner bezel at the outer edge of the dial – like the Seiko SARB017 Alpinist). The Seiko SNA411 runs on battery, which will require replacement after a few years (depends on how often you use the chronograph). And, you’ll look very impressive when using it. Now, the slide rule bezel might be a bit complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to perform calculations fast. Nevertheless, without buying an illegal replica, this gives you more or less the exact look, just with the Corgeut logo. A more wearable 40mm alternative, the unusually named Krug-Baumen ‘Air Traveller’ is a dirt-cheap Chinese-made Brietling copy, that takes its bling to the next level.The watch was designed and developed primarily for pilots and engineers, and with the built-in chronograph, analog alarm, and a rotary slide rule, you can accomplish a great number of tasks with the watch itself. Originally founded in Switzerland, Rotary watches are particularly popular in the United Kingdom; which is their primary market. One of their offerings, dubbed the ‘Chronospeed’, is clearly a homage to the Breitling Navitimer; featuring many of the same design cues. The Seiko SNA411 is on the bigger side of things. The face is 42mm, but if you include the crown you’ll land on 46mm in total. The height is on the smaller side though, with a total of 13mm. The smaller height is a nice combination with the larger diameter of the watch. Everything serves a purpose on the watch. The limited space is definitely not wasted on emptiness. Everything has been thought about. It’s definitely not random chaos. Most Sinn models come fitted with an ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement, which is considered one of the very best movements available, or alternatively the highly regarded Sellita SW500; which is essentially a clone of the former (Sellita used to make movements under contract for ETA).
The chronograph has a measurement of around 60 minutes and it can run up to 12 hours in a matter of 1/5 seconds. It has a deployment type clasp that has a push-button and it can work in up to 200m of water since it is water-resistant. One tips that I need to tell you is that the decimal place (how many 000s after the number) is not really clear from the dial unlike digital calculator.
Authenticity
Keep in mind these calculations are only approximate and not as accurate as any calculator. It is intended only to ease the calculation process and not for really exact values. For that a calculator is better as it is more accurate. Moving on to the bezel of this watch, it is bold, big, and of course practical. The bezel is not just there for aesthetics but it also serves a purpose. As mentioned, the watch has three subdials, two of which are used as the chronograph and one that works as an alarm (or an additional time zone). The bottom line is, that this watch is extraordinary – if you like functionality, practicality, and a watch face that’s filled to the brim with different elements of usage.
One thing that you will notice is how the stainless steel bracelet seems not matching well with the watch. The thing is the watch dial is very busy with lots of things on it. Seiko FlightMaster SNA411 really has a very distinct dial design which you will either love it or hate it. It’s super busy and will turn off lots of people. This brand doesn’t have the heritage or recognition of most other Swiss-made brands, so won’t retain its value the same way that rivals might.The rotary slide rule on the Seiko SNA411 is more elaborate than other normal slide rules due to many scales on it. As a result, you can use the SNA411 for many calculations. The 200m water resistance is something most people like to see on a more serious sports style watch. The 200m rating makes this suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports, and skin diving. This watch can withstand up to 200M of water, so you can use it when you are showering, swimming, scuba diving and while you do other water-related activities.
