About this deal

Small Talk Saves Lives is asking the public to trust their instincts and look out for fellow passengers who might need help, as illustrated in a new film that has gone live today.

The campaign draws on insights from successful interventions made by some of the 16,000 rail staff and BTP officers who’ve been trained by Samaritans in suicide prevention. For each life lost on the railway, six are saved.*** The hope is that by appealing to members of the public, the number of life-saving interventions being made across Britain will increase further. Younger adults aged 18-34 (72%) and Labour voters (79%) were more likely to see the strikes as justified compared with their older (aged 55+, 44%) and Conservative-voting (38%) counterparts. Ed Davey claims Boris Johnson and Grant Shapps are posing as bystanders while millions suffer, calling for them to intervene. Writing in the Guardian, the Liberal Democrats leader accuses the prime minister and his transport secretary, whom he brands “Sleepy Shapps”, of failing to plan ahead to minimise disruption. A Labour shadow minister has said it is “perfectly reasonable” for the party’s Scottish leader to take a different stance on the rail strikes to Keir Starmer.

Network Rail chief executive Andrew Haines said the organisation is “doing everything we can” to avoid the strike action. After an incredibly tough year and as the nation begins to readjust to life with easing restrictions, the campaign reminds the public they already have the skills to start a conversation with someone who needs help, giving them the confidence to act. By trusting our instincts, if something doesn’t feel right, a little small talk and a simple question, such as “Hello, what’s the time?” can be all it takes to interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts and help start them on the journey to recovery. It could save a life.

Downing Street has said it will “not give in” to demands from rail unions as Boris Johnson warned commuters they must “stay the course”. The prime minister’s spokesperson said Johnson believed it was “in the long-term interest of both the country and the public to not give in” to demands that he claimed would “stop us being able to modernise the railways”.

The Rail Forum event was a good opportunity to engage with a variety of suppliers. We really enjoyed the ‘speed dating’ style approach, and the platform was brilliant. Great engagement from the suppliers and we were able to hear about some very interesting products, services and solutions presented by some of the SMEs. A really well organised event that encouraged the start of bigger discussions.” Network Rail Keir Starmer is a prime minister in waiting leading a government in waiting, and it is important that he behaves in that way.

Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, has condemned the strikes as “extremely frustrating” and blamed the government for the disruption to the capital’s transport services. He said the strikes would have a “devastating impact” on the capital’s economy and that he hoped unions would return to the negotiating table with Transport for London and the government. Our Vision and Value

We are thrilled to have *12* TOCs participating as well as 2 owning group and GBR Transition Team: We have extended the line up to include Chiltern Railways and MTR Elizabeth Line as well as Transport UK as a second owning group participant. Thousands of members of the RMT working for Network Rail and fourteen train operating companies will walkout on from December 13th-14th and 16th-17th, as well as from January 3rd-4th and 6th-7th. We have a cost-of-living crisis, and it is unacceptable for railway workers to either lose their jobs or face another year of a pay freeze when inflation is at 11.1% and rising. Three out of five of those polled said they were generally supportive of the principle of industrial action, while just 35% were generally opposed, PA Media reported. Amid widespread industrial action across rail services, postal workers are also set to vote over whether to strike in a row over pay, it was announced today.

Small Talk Saves Lives has been developed after research showed passengers have a key role to play in suicide prevention. * Further research showed the majority are willing to act, but many wanted guidance on how to help, and reassurance they wouldn’t ‘make things worse’. ** Ed Davey claims Boris Johnson and Grant Shapps are posing as bystanders while millions suffer, calling for them to intervene. The rail industry and British Transport Police(BTP)work in partnership with Samaritans to reduce suicideson the railway and support those affected by them. Our suicide prevention programme includestraining railway employees and BTP staff to look out for and offer support to people who may be consideringsuicide andworking within the wider community to de-stigmatise suicide and promote help-seeking behaviour. To date almost 23,000 rail staff and BTP officers have received suicide prevention training. He said: “I think there are going to be many unions that are balloting across the country because people can’t take it any more. We’ve got people doing full-time jobs who are having to take state benefits and use food banks. That is a national disgrace.”These are desperately needed reforms that modernise the railway and put it on a sustainable footing for passengers and taxpayers. Joe then welcomes one of his racing heroes, illustrious journalist Jay Privman, who recently retired from his post as the excellent National Correspondent for the Daily Racing Form. Joe and Jay cover the topics and challenges of racing today, including renewed safety concerns, the implementation of HISA, Bob Baffert, the progress of California racing and much more. We couldn’t get enough of Jay, so we asked him to join us again leading up to the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita for more insights and for some reason he said yes. The RMT and Unite are also holding a separate 24-hour walkout for London Underground workers on Tuesday, which will cause huge disruption to the tube.
