About this deal

Affected plants start to wilt, sometimes just one section, with lower leaves becoming discoloured to yellow and brown. This could be another tree or shrub, a shed, or even just a temporary tarp during windy or very sunny conditions.

Japanese Acers' attractive foliage, interesting forms, autumn colour and slow growth rate makes them well suited to patio containers. With the correct care they'll live happily in a container for many years. The compact shape of this bush means it fits in even the tiniest garden spaces. It's amazing foliage changes throughout the seasons. Red tinged young leaves in spring with a dark green colouring and then vibrant shades of gold-yellow in summer. Once autumn rolls around, its leaves change to an amazing deep red before dropping into winter dormancy - perfect for adding some autumnal charm to your small garden. Positioning your Japanese Acer will depend on the variety but most will grow best in a sheltered position. Green-leaved trees will tolerate full sun but some shade in the brightest of conditions will help prevent scorch. Red/Purple leaved trees will need some sun to help their develop their rich colours while variegated leaved trees are more suited to partial shade as they are more susceptible to scorch from the afternoon sun.

Green Island Gardens

Acer palmatum 'Sumi nagashi' - a large leaved, fast growing maple with serrated leaves and an upright growth habit. Vivid red leaf colour in spring, turning bronze-green in summer, followed by bright crimson in the autumn. Lovely deciduous tree with upright habit, and as a real bonus the crimson leaves in autumn/winter are outstanding. Japanese Acers can live to over 100 years, so it's worth taking extra care in selecting and planting your tree as it will hopefully be a lifetime investment. Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream' - a slow growing deciduous Acer with beautiful golden yellow-orange spring growth turning limey-green for the summer then a stunning orange gold in the autumn. Suitable for all but the hottest parts of the garden, where the foliage is liable to scorch in the strong midsummer sun. Ideal for small gardens or large containers. Perfect in semi-shade in good, rich soil where it will make an impressive specimen plant. Water well until established to ensure a strong, healthy plant. Choose a straight edged pot rather than a rounded bulbous one as these are easier to remove if the roots have expanded. Japanese maples that have been planted out into the garden don't require heavy fertilisation so feed sparingly ideally using a fertiliser with a 3:1 ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus in spring. Avoid using nitrogen lawn feed in the immediate vicinity as excessive nitrogen can cause overly vigorous growth that's more vulnerable to disease.

This fungus also travels through the soil and can affect numerous different plants, including fruit and vegetables.Acer palmatum dissectum 'Stella Rossa' - slow growing deciduous Acer with lacy, pink-red foliage in the spring, which darkens to a rich purple in the summer, finally changing to bright flame-red in the autumn. Weeping habit, ideal for growing in containers, or for in a small garden. Acer is the latin name for the genus, which comprises approximately 130 species and over 700 cultivars. As Acers often have attractive autumn foliage colour, many countries have leaf-watching traditions. The Japanese custom of watching Acer leaves change colour is called momijigari. The same tradition is called Danpung-Nori in Korea. Avoid planting Japanese maples too close together as their shallow, spreading fibrous root system doesn't cope well with nearby competition. Beautiful Acer Palmatum Orange Dream is the perfect addition to any garden. Not only does its bright-coloured leaves change and turn from gold-orange in summer, to red and purple in Autumn making it a truly beautiful sight for your eyes to soak up; but it's also relatively easy to grow. This elegant tree can be planted pretty much anywhere. This tree is perfect for novice gardeners and is very low maintenance. T he perfect conditions for growing Japanese Acer would be well drained loam, slightly acidic and sandy with a good amount of organic matter but they will grow in most soil types. Avoid overly wet, dry or alkaline conditions.

This fungus can develop when the conditions around the Acer become wetter than normal for a sustained amount of time. Acers will be fine in most types of soil though will do best when there is a slight acidity in the soil. But don’t worry too much about the soil. Remove the pot and place the root mass in the planting hole so that the surface is flush with the surrounding ground. Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Use ericaceous compost when possible as this encourages vibrant foliage colour in Japanese Maples.

What makes an acer tree so good for a small space?

Consider planting your Acer in the ground, provided it is in a sheltered spot in well draining soil it should do well.
