I said “It’s raining pretty heavy out there. Are you sure you don’t want me to get your lunch today?” When I delivered Tara’s lunch, she wanted to talk about Jenny’s visit. I sat in a chair next to Tara and started telling her about how Jenny had told Helen off in Brian’s office. Tara sat eating her lunch, sometimes laughing at the tale of Helen’s comeuppance. Tara was very animated and happy today, after talking to Jenny, and Helen being pulled into line. I don’t think I’ve seen her so happy before.

Around 8:40am Jenny from our State Office made a surprise visit to our centre. Jenny was the State Manager’s righthand woman. She was in her fifties and had a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

It’s just around my feet, where I had to step in puddles.” Tara continued “Unfortunately, I will have to wait until lunchtime to find out whether my shoes can be repaired or not. And either way, I won’t be left with sufficient time to have my lunch!” I said “Ah, I see. So you must hate it when you get cat hair on your coat or at things like that engagement party.”Then she shrugged and her face relaxed, and she said “OK! If you really want to pay, then you can pay! But I think it’s kind of weird that you would pay for my shoes to be repaired. I’ve got a hairdressers appointment on Friday! Do you want to pay for that as well???” I began to wipe Tara’s boot while I answered Helen’s question. As I was speaking, Tara moved her foot up so her foot was resting only on my leg. I continued to talk to Helen, and to wipe Tara’s boot, but I glanced up at Tara’s face. She was grinning and looked like she was trying not to laugh. Tara put up her hand and said “Yeah, OK... If there’s anything, I’ll let you know. Bye”, and then Tara left with her freshly cleaned suit. Still, I never really knew what time Tara would arrive at work... it tended to be any time between 8:20 and 8:40. And I always got to work before 8:15. Tara said “I HAVE been criticizing her work! And I’ve been dumping work in her tray, saying things like ‘There you go!’ and ‘That’ll give you something to do!’, trying to sound as arrogant as I possibly can, but she just isn’t taking the bait!”

Helen said “So you got him to clean your boots??? You couldn’t wait til you’d finished your lunch and clean em yourself???” When Helen came out of Brian’s office, she wouldn’t even look at me. She was giving me the freeze. The silent treatment. Helen lives with her boyfriend, Wayne, but in the past Helen had often told me that Wayne spends a lot of time in his man cave, on his own, watching television and gluing together model aeroplanes... while Helen sat on her own in the living room watching television and drinking wine. I cleaned the toe of her boot, and the top, and then the sides. Then I began cleaning around her boot’s heel. Again Tara got her lunch herself, as it turned into a sunny day. But she must’ve avoided any remaining puddles outside, as she didn’t request any more boot cleaning that day.Our manager, Anne, met a guy online and moved overseas to be with him (she hasn’t quit, and is just on leave without pay). Andrew took over as acting manager, but that didn’t last long (haha... more about that later!)
