So, what of the characters themselves? With an Imperial Guard novel authors are typically given the chance to offer a more varied number of figures than other races. The unenhanced human element certainly works in their favour, and Cadian Honour features an ensemble of varied and engaging characters throughout the ranks. Cadia itself was a bleak, merciless and wind-blown planet, where only the strongest survived to adulthood and discipline was learned from the moment a babe took his or her first steps. Cold winds howled across wide, sundered plains where armies trained with live ammunition and every solar day not spent training was believed to be a day wasted. Every Cadian fortress-city, or " Kasr," was a massive citadel, with the streets and buildings fashioned with great tactical cunning by the finest military engineers and siege specialists of the Astra Militarum.

This monstrous kinetic strike wiped out most of Cadia's defenders, destroyed the network of Cadian Pylons and tectonically destabilised the world.While fandoms end up demanding the change of a status quo sooner or later, few tend to be prepared to deal with the consequences. It's usually the demand for some huge change, or shift to keep things interesting, but without a deeper understanding of how this might impact the world at large. This was the case with Warhammer 40,000, where the fandom had long been demanding for the timeline to move forward, but few people seemed to ask "So what now?" Minka Lesk is one of the soldiers who survived the apocalypse that consumed Cadia. She now fights on to honour the brave souls lost to one of Abaddon’s most audacious gambits . No one can break the Astra Militarum when they’re dug in, and the Aegis Defence Line is the perfect redoubt. This set contains two defence lines each consisting of six connected barricades and a central command platform. Characterization: I'd hazard to call what we have in the book more viewpoints than characters. Obviously, they are characters, but none of them are particularly developed, they all have the same basic drive and behave in basically the same fashion, effectively making it very easy for one to blend into the other. 2/5

The characters are too inept to engage interest and the only sympathetic character is an artist's apprentice who will do anything to survive, including becoming a murderer and crazed cultist. Cadian society was so martial that camouflage patterns made their way into the everyday fashion of even the wealthy and successful. It was always very easy to determine who was an outsider or local on Cadia simply by what they wore.JH: I think this is being envisaged as the first Minka Lesk novel so you could go straight in, but if you want to get the full setting then reading Cadia Stands gives you the set up. And if you really like stories of common grunts facing down all the horrors of the 40K universe, then there’s a ream of Ursarkar E. Creed stories ( you can find here) which I think have been hugely well received.

Thus Cadia had an odd mix of dense urban areas and vast open tundras and other natural landscapes unspoiled by the hand of Humanity. The first book in the brand new Dawn of Fire series, this effectively takes place as the Indomitus Crusade begins. If you haven’t already read Dark Imperium , this is definitely the place to start with the Era Indomitus stories. There’s lots about Guilliman and masses of great new lore, but also all sorts of interesting arcs featuring the Imperial Navy, the Inquisition and the Administratum. Perhaps, just as a veteran can lead lesser men to deeds of great heroism, Cadia had inspired those worlds around it to defend every nation and city to the last bullet. Perhaps Cadia's surviving soldiery lent strength through their hunger for retribution. Perhaps those battered by the storm simply fought for survival. Whatever the reason, the defenders of the Cadian Gate resolved to uphold the virtues of its lost lynchpin world come what may. Justin D Hill follows up his Ursarkar Creed short stories in Legends of the Dark Millennium: Astra Militarum with the tale of the hero's finest - and darkest - hour. Sent to the capital world of Potence, Sergeant Minka Lesk and the Cadian 101st discover that though Cadia may have fallen, their duty continues.

the writing is boring. the characters are flat and banal, from troops, to officers, to commissars, to heretics. they re also stupid. It's the follow-up to Cadia Stands and continues the journey of Minka Lesk and her warriors as they seek revenge against the Imperium's enemies for the loss of their world. Every hero has a moment that defines their legend, a battle that sets them on the path they are meant to walk. For Ursarkar Creed, that moment is here. Cadia itself is under threat – the hordes of Chaos emerge once more from the Eye of Terror, and the forces of the Imperium muster to meet them. But on Tyrok Fields, an act of base treachery, spurred on by an old enemy of Creed’s, will change everything and provide General Creed a chance to prove his worth once and for all, and embrace his destiny as Lord Castellan of Cadia.

The sequel to The Emperor’s Legion , this takes a similar approach and features two of the three main characters from its predecessor. The Regent in the title refers to Guilliman, and the Primarch’s absence – and the void left behind – is very much at the core of this excellent, politics-heavy story. The first BL fiction released to explore the events of the Fall of Cadia, this begins just before the events of The Battle of Tyrok Fields but mostly covers the main thrust of Abaddon’s invasion, shown from a variety of Cadian perspectives. Interestingly, while Ursarkar E. Creed does briefly appear, this is definitely not his story – instead it introduces Major Isaia Bendikt and a certain Whiteshield named Minka Lesk (as well as carrying over a few characters from Hill’s Creed stories), and offers a sort of ‘grunts-eye’, boots-on-the-ground view of the planet’s final hours. It’s really good, just don’t expect the full big picture – that’s not quite what this is.In the grim dark future, there is only war, but you can't just make it about war, you need interesting characters you get to know and love (or love to hate) to experience the setting. Last seen in Cadian Honour , Lesk and her fellow soldiers find themselves embroiled in a bloody stalemate when traitor forces on the planet Malouri retreat to a nigh-impregnable island fortress. You’ll notice that I’ve also included a trio of Ursarkar E. Creed short stories on the timeline – more on those shortly.
