About this deal

This book is extraordinary. I now understand how important it is for me to trust an author. I am generally uncomfortable with magical realism and usually avoid books in which it plays a part. I knew nothing about this book before I read it however, other than it was written by Hannah Kent, both of whose previous novels, Burial Rites and The Good People, I loved. When this book’s storyline developed into magical realism therefore, I trusted Hannah Kent to take me with her on the journey and oh! What a journey it is! Against the silence of the forest, her footsteps upon the twigs and needles sounded impossibly loud.

Like, the whole premise of the novel seems to rest on Ella's unhealthy obsession getting out of control, but nothing ever really happens? Ella lusts after everyone and there is seemingly sexual tension in everything, but in the end ... nothing really happens. You expect there to be drama, but there is nothing. An eyebrow-raising scene that seems completely out of left-field, but overall not anything particularly exciting.Hanne and Thea’s friendship is a miracle. Before, Hanne always felt apart from the local girls, but with Thea it all came easy. Suddenly she could imagine a future for herself, a happy one, by Thea’s side. Frank, Jason P. (August 4, 2022). when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now. It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife. This is my third book by Hannah Kent my first two were a 5 star ‘Burial Rites’ and a 4 star ‘The Good People’. So as you can see the stars have been on the decline. But mainly, this is a love story, with passions running high and overshadowing everything else. These are girls in their teens. There is no question that it is praiseworthy for the writing alone, and I enjoyed the history. I did become impatient with Hanne’s continuous, overflowing of declarations of love. For me, this is a case of sometimes less is more. (I know, I know, this review is long, but almost half of it is Kent’s glorious prose!)Ditto Lonnie and James. Which is weird, because the book spends most of its time obsessing over Lonnie, but it's more about what she has and how she behaves. There's no history for any of the characters which makes them pretty bland.

For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. The novel also skims over its racial politics. Kent’s writing was informed by conversations with Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri elder Mandy Brown; and at a recent event, she highlighted the complexities of setting any story in this period without “privileging the perspective of the oppressors”. The “creative risk” she takes in Devotion is in part, she said, a way to get round this. But the supernatural route (no further spoilers) feels to me like an abnegation of the bigger risk – that of engaging more closely with the politics of either of the peoples she has chosen to portray. She touches on their encounters so fleetingly that it feels more like due diligence, cushioning the novel’s principal, romantic theme. John “Red” Parkinson who said the initial “hello” to Ms. Taylor in Cannes, and Charlie Kline were Marine infantry, on their first tour, and they became friends for life. Jesse and Tom didn’t know these Marines but they would provide air support to them and save their lives at the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. Lieutenant Rober Reem, USMC, Red and Charlie’s squad leader, would save lives but by falling on a grenade in the gun pit that was being overrun by the NK. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. The writing is exceptional. Here is one descriptions of how Hanne feels when she is at one with a tree or a plant. His name was Roland Christensen, but everyone called him Chris. He was of Danish descent and had a kind, open face. He was a flight instructor at Glenview Naval Air Station in 1947, and he held the careers of many would-be Navy pilots in his hands. An average of 10 pilots per day washed out of Glenview. This is one of those books that isn’t sure what it wants to be, and that makes for an uneven reading experience that’s ultimately not as satisfying as it could have been.
