Vera is famous for her fishing hat. Vera wouldn’t be Vera without her famous green hat, and she’s never without it when she’s out and about investigating. Matched with a similar green raincoat, and comfortable boots, Vera’s fashion style oozes "down to earth". In 1980 she made her TV debut in Mike Leigh’s Grown-Ups, then starred in the sitcom Chance in a Million. A film career followed with a part in Nicolas Roeg’s The Witches in 1990, and then for her role as Cynthia in Mike Leigh’s 1996 film Secrets and Lies she won Best Actress at Cannes, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination. She earned a second Academy Award nomination two years later for Little Voice. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Brenda appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including Between the Sheets, Pride & Prejudice, War and Peace , and Anne Frank before landing the role of Vera in 2011. She has also appeared in the 2020 sitcom Kate and Koji, playing Kate, the owner of a seaside cafe. And it's no longer just viewers in the UK who have grown impatient for the last two instalments of the current run will be available to watch, Australian fans are now also searching for answers. Vera series 11's run on ITV has now been disrupted twice. There was great excitement at the end of August when, after a Covid enforced delay to filming a year earlier, the first two episodes were broadcast in the drama's usual Sunday night slot. Vera investigates when an old associate, Bella Furness, is found bludgeoned to death in the barn of her farmhouse. Environmentalist Ann Preece, who discovered the body, denies having a motive for murder. Suspicion falls upon Bella's stepson, Neville, who stands to inherit the land on which the farmhouse is located. His connections with a local quarrying firm, who plan to demolish the farmhouse to build an access road for a new quarry, further complicates Vera's investigation. Meanwhile, Vera is confronted by a bereaved mother whose son disappeared whilst up at the farmhouse several years previously. As a complex love triangle involving several of the prime suspects begins to unravel, a second murder throws suspicion upon the identity of Bella's killer, and links between the three cases begin to emerge, suggesting a possible motive for murder. This is a story where everybody becomes a suspect, some several times over. It ends up going round in circles at time, as Vera revisits people she has already questioned. The body of Lisa Millworth, an HR advisor of a local turbine company, is washed up on the banks of the River Tyne. Vera and her team discover a mountain of lies as told by Lisa's family regarding both their own and Lisa's whereabouts and their knowledge of the incident. I was glad to be starting work again for lots of reasons. But at the same time I was nervous of it, admits Brenda Blethyn. "We were in the middle of a global pandemic and nobody was safe really. But when it was explained to me about all the precautions to be set in place and my word they were very very thorough, I became a little less nervous. I was quizzed on the phone by a Covid detective, and medicals were carried out to make sure I wasn’t too vulnerable. Medicals are necessary anyway for any filming for insurance purposes. They really just want to know you’re going to make it to the end of the shoot! Joe's daughter is a witness to the death of a pensioner, seemingly stabbed, on a rush hour train she and her father were travelling on. Her seemingly quiet life turns out to be anything but as Vera's investigation begins to unravel a tangled web of lies and deceit. An old friend of Vera's father appears to hold the key to the entire mystery, which involves unraveling a murder committed thirty years previously, a rape, and an affair which nobody suspected would be likely to have taken place. Vera realises that the answer may lie in events which have started to repeat themselves.
