Expanders with no PHYs configured as subtractive act as fanout expanders and can connect to any number of other expanders. Expanders with subtractive PHYs may only connect to two other expanders at a maximum, and in that case they must connect to one expander via a subtractive port and the other via a non-subtractive port. Because of its higher signaling voltages, SAS can use cables up to 10m (33ft) long, whereas SATA has a cable-length limit of 1m (3.3ft) or 2m (6.6ft) for eSATA. [11]

A SAS controller can control SATA drives, but a SATA controller cannot control SAS drives. Lower pins (S1-S7, P1-P11) defined as in SATA. Upper pins S8-S14 provide additional lane of data. SAS connectors are much smaller than traditional parallel SCSI connectors. Commonly, SAS provides for point data transfer speeds up to 12Gbit/s. [17] Also I would like to run it with Raid 50 and IPMI ports are important since I remote in a lot and want to be able to remotely reboot and manage that too... etc, etc.

Am I getting the number of HDD's it supports logically and the number of HDD's the cable supports physically without an expander confused? (I.e. the card can handle 16 HDD's using two 8633 connectors as long as I have an expander. Or it is limited to 8 total HDD's for two connections (4 for each cable) without an expander?)
