About this deal

The bed should be made far enough in advance of setting out the plants for it to warm up – two weeks should be sufficient. Now that we've seen some of the greatest benefits Leca can give you and your plants, let's look at how it works! It's always helpful to know how the growing medium you use works, because this tells you if you need to change your plant care routine to best help a plant. How does Leca work? It helps create a humid microclimate around the plant, protecting it from the dry air created by modern central heating systems. Simply place a layer of dampened Hydroleca in a dish and stand the pot on it. Water frequently. Whether you call them leca beads, hydroton balls, expanded clay balls, hydroleca, or hydroponic pebbles, they’re essentially all the same thing. (Honestly, I just call it “leca” and drop the capitals for convenience).

Keeping a 5 cm depth of Hydroleca moist on a bench in a greenhouse can help improve humidity levels.

All prices shown below are per parcel with a maximum weight of 30 kg per parcel. Items over 30 kg are split into multiple boxes and charged per box.

When you're ready to water your plant that's growing in Leca, you'll need to prepare the water first. You'll need to add the hydroponic fertilizer to the water you use to water your plant and mix it well. This will help to dilute the fertilizer with the water and turn your plain old water into a hydroponic nutrient solution. You can water any of your Leca-growing plants with this nutrient solution and you're done! It's a little bit of preparation before you water your plant, but that's all you'll need to do to take care of a plant that's growing in Leca. Conclusion A layer of Hydroleca looks attractive laid out on top of pots as a topper and also helps retain moisture, adds humidity and helps to avoid evaporation

Place the plant pot on a layer of Hydroleca which will absorb water and release it slowly to prevent root damage caused by the pot standing in water

Thank you for reading this post! I hope it helps you to keep your plants healthy and beautiful! If you're looking for more guides on specific plants, you can always request a plant guide to get a guide for the plant you have trouble with. While any slow release feed you've included in the potting medium will last several months, once that has been used up, you can supplement with a monthly general liquid feed in the growing season. Plants growing in the ground are unlikely to need fertiliser. Overwintering Use a layer of Hydroleca instead of pot shards or pebbles in the bottom of pots and other container before filling with compost to ensure excellent aeration and drainage. A layer of Hydroleca in drainage channels under lawns will improve their performance as the "pebbles" resist compaction better than other traditional materials.

Eco-friendly – It’s made exclusively from clay (which isn’t exactly endangered), and it’s completely inert and non-toxic. So it’s safe to use with all manner of plants. Using a layer of hydroleca instead of pebbles or broken pots will help with drainage and provide excellent aeration.

While sempervivum appreciate being watered in dry in spring or summer weather, they can survive happily without.

About The Author

LECA” is actually a sexy acronym for an otherwise un-sexy product. Lightweight Expandable Clay Aggregate, to be precise. You have had the goods delivered within seven working days of delivery from Future Garden Ltd, this starts from the day after the goods have been signed for. Thoroughly clean the growing area to avoid the aggregate becoming contaminated with debris from preceding crops or infected soil. If you're looking for other ways to avoid overwatering your plants, have a look at "How to avoid overwatering your plants". Less risk of root rot Earlier in this plant care guide, I mentioned that Leca doesn't provide your plants with the nutrients they need to grow properly. Leca only takes care of watering your plants. As such, you'll need to add nutrients to water yourself. These nutrients are slightly different from the fertilizer you would give to plants growing in soil. But what are the key differences? What are hydroponics nutrients (fertilizer)?
