About this deal

Some smart light bulbs connect to the internet via Wi-Fi and can be controlled when you’re at home, and when you’re not around. However, other models use Bluetooth and require extra kit if you want to switch them on and off remotely. When it comes to selecting the right smart lights for you, there are a number of considerations you must make before choosing a particular model.

Like the best smart home devices, smart lights use wireless technologies to connect to your smartphone and allow you to control the bulb from an app. Wireless Motion Sensor: Keep things clutter free with a hey! smart sensor. Because they are battery powered (3 x AAA) these 5V motion sensors don’t require any complicated or unsightly wiring work.

Motion Control an Entire Room

The first thing you should consider is the range and angle that you’ll need for your property—and your property only! It’ll be highly annoying for your neighbors if they can easily trip your motion sensor lights from their yard or, even worse, from their home! So, if you live on tighter lots, a shorter range might actually be better, while if you live on a large piece of property, you’ll want something that extends a long way out.

Our article about how smart lights work offer further in-depth reading. Can you put smart bulbs in any lamp? As we've already mentioned, the best smart light bulbs are LED, which have a longer lifespan than their incandescent counterparts. On top of that they also use less energy, which is not only good for the environment, but also has less of an impact on your wallet too. When you couple this with a longer lifespan, the investment in smart lights is most definitely worth it. How do smart light bulbs work? PIR sensor switches are particularly useful in situations where you need hands free lighting automation, such as entering a room with your hands full or needing hands free automation for hygiene purposes, such as public toilets, corridors or other buildings where light is only needed as and when required. We're still reviewing these, but from our experience so far we're pretty impressed. Especially when you've got all your other lights turned down, they make movie-watching all the more enjoyable. Thanks to the built-in light sensor, the Motion Sensor P1 can turn on the night light made of an LED strip automatically, when you wake up at night.

As you'd expect, the British Gas Hive Motion Sensor does send a notification to your smartphone or tablet every time it detects movement, just as it's supposed to. However, you will need to partner it with a Hive Hub for it to work – so it's best fitted as part of a whole Hive Smart Home system (you don't need to be a British Gas customer for this though). When placed around a living space, these low-profile wireless devices are able to detect specific activities, like movement, temperature, or the opening or closing of a door. Then they tell other smart devices how to react—smart lights, plugs, speakers, thermostats, and so on—all in an instant, and without requiring any direct commands or effort from you. Some detect just one activity, while others are multitaskers. Install one and you might solve a single problem—add a bunch and you’re on your way to having a home that runs on autopilot. Many smart bulbs use Bluetooth to pair directly to your phone, but these smart lights can’t be controlled when you’re in a different room, or further away, because Bluetooth is a point-to-point connection. Don't like the sound of hexagons and triangles? Nanoleaf Canvas are square-shaped light panels but they can't be combined with Nanoleaf Shapes, unfortunately. As a light, the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro isn’t quite as powerful as a dedicated outdoor motion sensor light. The lights only have a range of about 30 feet, though the camera can see and follow motion beyond that in daylight. However, the motion sensor itself has a great radius, more than 180 degrees, which is better than many other models.Future-Proofing via OTA: The sensor now supports OTA updates, which means that new features and fixes can be added after the release of the product. The light’s motion sensor is a bit limited, which is typical of battery-powered motion sensor lights, offering only 120 degrees. The range is surprisingly strong, besting our best value model by 4 feet. The spotlight is quite small, meaning it’s excellent for side doors, pet areas, or as a supplemental light when the main light is turned off.
