If you’re into NERF warfare of the less subtle persuasion, the Hyperfire is a suitably unsubtle beast that offers a ton of fun. It spits out foam darts faster than any NERF blaster before it, and is a joy to handle. Works best in open areas.As an intimidating heavy assault weapon, the Mastodon is in a league of its own. It’s big, hard-hitting, rapid-firing and a whole heap of fun. Sure, it isn’t super-long-ranged, but the flat-ish trajectory out to medium distances more than makes up for that. And did I mention that it’s fun? The motordrive does spoil the party a little, however, with that diet of six D cells. Not only are they expensive, but they’re not the type of batteries that you’re likely to have just lying around in a drawer – especially not six of them. One other slight downside to this battery-powered blaster is the whirr of the motor and flywheel. If you’re trying to be at all stealthy, that goes out the window when you spin the Hyperfire up – your foe may have a split second’s warning before the darts rain down. Not that it’s terribly noisy; it’s just not silent. Can jam if used incorrectly: I think we covered this. To start firing, press flywheel and wait a second before triggering, to stop, let go of trigger, wait a second, then let go of flywheel.

The jam door is hard to open: you need to pull the button on the jam clearing door really hard to open. Style: this blaster is really stylish.
