HiFi Man Edition XS Headphones have been designed so that while you listen, you are sitting in the best seats in the house. The XS features HiFi Man’s Stealth Magnet Technology and NEO super nano Diaphragm. Stealth Magnet Listening to Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique Mov. 4,” you immediately hear the depth and clarity of the timpani strikes. Electronic music that uses a lot of synthesized bass has good clarity and impact as well.

In addition to testing these headphones on music of all styles, we conduct extensive clinical tests on frequency response, dynamic range, driver matching, harmonic distortion, binaural tests, wiring, and stereo imaging. Speaking of the diaphragm, HIFIMAN in combination with the stealth magnets used their new NsD NEO Super Nano diaphragm on the Edition XS which is claimed to be 75% thinner than their previous diaphragms and particularly compared to the diaphragm which was used on Edition X.

It seems HIFIMAN has been fairly successful with the introduction of this fourth-generation headband design. It seems robust enough to stand up to some abuse but I do miss the first headband version as it seemed to be the smaller in profile up on top with full swivel cups. I’m speaking about the headband used on the HE5 and other models like the HE4XX. It’s a simple yet effective design that provides stability and comfort.

The cable terminates in a 3.5mm TRS right-angle plug and HIFIMAN includes a 6.35mm adapter. On the other end, there are two 3.5mm plugs in a rather common positive tip and negative sleeve configuration which makes it easy to obtain an aftermarket cable if you so desire or to go balanced which by the way I do recommend doing with the Edition XS.

Strings have good clarity and texture as well and there is enough energy here to let the violin really shine in its upper registers. That energy translates well for female vocals as well; they stand out in the mix without standing too far in front of the rest of the instrumentation. The way it works is that the Magnets themselves were reshaped to reduce wave diffractions, and turbulence, and reduce distortion by retaining the integrity of the sound waves as they leave the diaphragm. The HIFIMAN Stealth Magnet design seems to improve mostly the perceived soundstage but also improves them in other areas like in frequency spectrum and tonality. If you’re into personal audio, then you probably have some knowledge about the Hifiman brand. It was founded in 2007 by Dr Fang in New York to produce high-end personal audio products. Hifiman was the first brand to release a high-end portable audio player, the HM-801, which was like a catalyst for Reference Audio Players that we know today. The Edition XS easily compete with headphones in their price range with a very high price-to-performance ratio. The XS are an amazing value and offer performance not far off from headphones more than twice their cost. The magnets used within the XS headphones are Stealth magnets which are engineered to be a special shape and enable the waves to pass through the magnet without generating interference. The magnets have been designed to be acoustically transparent, which creates dramatically reduced wave diffraction turbulence that would otherwise degrade the soundwaves generated by the XS.
