Bloody and brutal and far more grounded, and with some of the most lavishing and evocative art you will ever see in a comic book, this is how you do it. After being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, and seeing the state of the world, King realizes that all his work wasn’t to improve the system, it was to maintain it, and that system has sold out the many for the benefit of the few.

I have always said that some of the Millarworld books could be phenomenal if a great editor was brought on-board to help cut out the immature, tactless, unnecessary dialogue and plot points out of the story. As the authorities grow frustrated, they decide to fight fire with fire, engaging the services of Atticus King, Roland's son and rival.

The artwork of Matteo Scalera and Giovanna Niro is one of the foremost reasons for the book's cinematic impression, where even the most brutal moments have an artistic fervor to them. Throughout the entire tale, Roland is fixated on his self-righteous journey until things come full circle, like a Greek tragedy. Sure, he talks about how he feels bad about some of the horrible things he did in years prior, but when we are shown these sequences, Millar basks in the glory of the depravity on display. Throw in some 'Unforgiven' and 'Old Man Logan' and you have a potent mix of violence, intrigue, and retribution.

At the same time I really enjoyed his run through Marvel’s Ultimate universe, with a few notable exceptions (see above). For years, he has indulged in debauchery and decadence, serving the higher powers while looking the other way, sparing not an ounce of thought for the greater good. Netflix is describing the graphic novel by saying a “translation of this original Netflix property is written by Millar and will also be drawn by a superstar artist chosen from the comic book world, based on designs created by the team at Netflix. I can’t wait for people to see it and wanted to share a couple of the images we’ve been putting together for the comic-book side of the project.Bush, Pope Benedict XVI, and Prince Andrew, you'll maybe get a momentary chuckle, but the rest is a tiresome and increasingly ludicrous series of action set pieces duct-taped together with father and son issues straight out of Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" song. Mark has been an Executive Producer on all his movie adaptations and is currently creative consultant to Fox Studios on their Marvel slate of movies. In a flashback, the spy jumps otf a skyscraper, slams into the roof of a car, and then hops up as if he merely stepped off a curb.

David Maraniss, author of Once in a Great City: A Detroit Story Blaine Harden has now produced a fascinating trilogy of stranger-than-fiction books about North Korea. It only lost 1 star because I felt the ending was a bit abrupt and the overall story/series could've actually used maybe two more issues to make the narrative pace feel a bit less rushed.The action-packed second issue opens with our heroine getting her first taste of the new apocalyptic world. I have another Millar graphic novel on my to-read pile and I am convinced I will see the same shortcomings there as I see here; the only question will be the degree of their severity.

Seeing a character in the latter half of his life learning to live with the atrocities and carnage that he laid in his wake as a young man could have been incredible and yet it is wasted here in service of telling yet another undeveloped, juvenile tale of mindless mayhem.
