About this deal

The author proves especially adept at depicting relationships among her characters, including several queer relationships. Shannon has created a world rich in intricate mythology, beautifully realised and complex, and placed at its heart bold and vivid characters. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

It's a sweeping tale that spans the Grief of Ages (a time Priory readers will recognise from the world's history) with perspectives from all across it's vast map. In a book with such an epic scope it's hard to find a place to start when reviewing, but I will nevertheless attempt explaining how infatuated I am with this book in my mere words. Shannon skillfully grounds high-stakes fantasy action in human emotion and a mature exploration of duty, bodily autonomy, identity, and motherhood. It seems initially as if at least three of these POVs are all on separate trajectories and are unlikely to meet in the main plot and part of the joy of the story is unravelling how these pathways will collide. Knowing it's a standalone, I assumed exactly how it would end from the start and it does just about that.

Glorian Berethnet, teenage daughter to the queen of Inys, faces mounting pressure to conceive her own child and secure the line of succession. In the East, the mountain-dwelling Dumai trains as a godsinger, establishing a connection between humankind and the dragons that her society worships. At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" Hugo Award winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution. Huge in scope, rich with emotion, and gorgeously queer, A Day of Fallen Night is the Roots of Chaos book fans have been waiting for.

It’s the perfect time of the year to curl up with a good book—and keep that New Year’s resolution to read more. Most of the original cast aren’t born yet, but some of the new characters are their distant relatives, which I hope will give you a sense of connection to them.

However Shannon skilfully examines the issue from all perspectives and from a variety of different approaches to parenthood. To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hroth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. This one was even longer than The Priory of the Orange Tree and while a book being a chonky boi isn't something that generally ever puts me off, I'm well acquainted with the author's writing; there is never a wasted word nor a moment where you can scan over a descriptive passage.

We even know a piece of Glorian's story, from the history of Priory, but there is still much that we do not know.

The New York Times bestselling, stunning, standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree , now in paperback. Overall, A Day of Fall Night is a beautifully written epic fantasy full of nuanced character development, but it suffers from disjointed flow and fails to deliver a story that justifies its 880-page girth. Every other vendor I previously bought from shipped these books in thin bags with no protection, and they all arrived damaged.

Although I cannot say too much about the plot of Wulf's story, know that it is enrapturing, never ceasing to elude and devour you. I would have preferred more moments of drama and surprise in the middle of the book to lift things a little because it felt everything was being saved to the end and the conclusion of this series. And they did it for the most part, but you can see how Esbar chose her people over her daughter a little, and how Glorian is desperately trying to do both. The heroes shine in their uniqueness, with diverse family dynamics interwoven throughout and representation ranging from queer lords and warriors to genderfluid alchemists.I loved the first book so I was so excited to finally get my hands on this, sad to see it arrived with a tear in the beautiful cover sleeve!
