About this deal

In 1954, English composer Alan Rawsthorne set six of the poems in a work for speaker and orchestra entitled Practical Cats, which was recorded soon afterwards, with the actor Robert Donat as the speaker. I know I have read this more times than I have dates for, so this mayn't be surprising, but I wanted there to be more variety. I bought it for me and I'm glad I did, despite a few hiccups with one of the sellers (who no longer sells this book). Admittedly the hyper-sexualisation of Eliot’s text is eyebrow-raising, and means this is certainly no Pixar movie.

Throughout the 1930s he composed the now famous poems about Macavity, Old Deuteronomy, Mr Mistoffelees and many other cats, under the name of ‘Old Possum’. My favourite poem was the one on Macavity which was fun to read aloud and create some good rhythm to it. Edward Gorey (1925-2000) wrote and illustrated such popular books as The Doubtful Guest, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, and The Headless Bust. I would have liked it if individual lines had had their own illustrations and it would have been good for the text to wrap itself around the pictures. The full book consists of 15 very short poems, most of which describe a distinct personality of cat.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The acclaimed poet of The Waste Land, Four Quartets, and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, among numerous other poems, prose, and works of drama, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948.

They have also been published in versions illustrated by Edward Gorey (1982), Axel Scheffler (2009) and Rebecca Ashdown (2014). Eliot is known for masterworks of poetry like The Waste Land, but somehow also the author of this delightful collection of cat poems. But I think there is more to this - here you find insight in to the world of T S Eliot- from the source of those rather special names for the cats (and dogs) to the fact that London town would not be the same with out those feline characters making it their own.She grew up by the sea, on the south coast of England, spending most of her childhood reading, writing, drawing and running wild. I read it to my grandchildren of 9 and 5 and they enjoyed it very much, especially as they have cats at home. S. Eliot published Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats through the publishing house Faber and Faber, where he served as an editor. Many of the poems have refrains, so it’s easy to see why they lent themselves to use in a musical ( Cats).

there are so many famous names here and not just made famous from the likes of Elaine Paige but the fact that many of the names have now seeped in to common culture. But the paper is crappy and discolored, and often the illustrations are back-to-back, so I'd probably get bleed through too. The British rock band Mungo Jerry derived their name from the book's poem " Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer". So, I'm really more of a dog guy, and I don't know if that's the reason or if it was the horribly ridiculous musical or what, but despite considering T.

With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. I tend to like this better than the Bentley and Gorey editions, and this edition is really well worth it. But even if that's me, I'm glad I finally got around to reading about Rum Tum Tugger, Old Deuteronomy, and Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat. No missing or damaged pages, no tears, possible very minimal creasing, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.
