About this deal

The uninitiated wouldn’t even know and maybe be afraid to try the middle buttons if they already have what they need from the face buttons. Button also doubles as a START button, meaning it is only possible to pause a game by pressing the pause button on the console itself. The difference between the consistent accuracy between the Honey Bee D-pad and the original Master System D-pad is night and day. My Brief Sega Master System Controller Hunt: If you’re new to the Sega Master System, as I was until recently, you’ll not find a multitude of options outside of the original controller readily available.

If this is something that bothers you, they do offer a custom 3D printed plate to cover them if you’d prefer. Like the Famicom in Japan, the lead from the controller comes out at the right-hand side of the unit. If I was planning to play an SMS marathon, maybe, or especially if I was trying to place in a highscore contest or something, i'd use a gen 6b pad for sure. The 8 point D-pad works great with Arcade ports so although there is an Arcade pad alternative to this controller, this one is more than adequate. Having a controller that is just the size of an NES controller instead of being large and round like modern day controllers may be easier on your hands. When the positive lead (red) and the negative (black) are connected to the same wire that allows current to flow through, the multimeter will beep.

I could use my scheme from when I repaired the Wico Q stick joystick in a previous post to identify button 1 + up / down / left / right, followed by placing the multimeter in pin 9 to see what cable color button 2 had (as seen below, it was yellow).

Not only that, it needs a solution that is brand new and doesn’t run the risk of falling apart because it’s 30 years old. Much like the Turbografx-16 controller, the Honey Bee lets you set Turbo or Auto fire features without the need of the cumbersome ‘Rapid Fire’ attachment piece that was originally released for the Master System. Next, the buttons on the Honey Bee are concave, rather than convex, much like the original NES controller most of us grew up on. I found a Sega Genesis controller to be preferable (particularly ones that had a built in turbo feature), yet even that was not as enjoyable, and I didn’t like the mapping of the buttons to B and C rather than A and B. The extra Japanese mode is required for games like Wonder Boy 3 which will only output FM sound when the console is set to the Japanese region.
