About this deal

When I started the book, I wasn’t that sure about the characters as Grace is easy to understand and love, however, the same can’t be said for her granddaughter, beautifully portrayed as a Head Teacher, following in her grandfather’s footsteps, whereas her daughter hates school and the tension between the two is palpable. I was completely captivated by this character-driven story of mother/daughter relationships and really cared about the characters; I was genuinely sad to finish it and leave them all behind. It is such a well written book, with the characters being fully formed and believable, it had me rooting for the best outcome for them all.

I cried and I laughed and now there’s a hole in my life where Grace and her dysfunctional family used to be. I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. Ruth Jones’ third novel is another warm, heartfelt story, filled with strong and joyful female characters that captures the challenges and joys of relationships and family. Luminous and lyrical, yet anchored by roots running deep into the earthy and everyday, it is about the power of stories: their invisible currents that run through all we do, writing and rewriting us, and the transforming light that they throw onto our world. Grace knows that by tracing and meeting Alys after so many years she risks her granddaughter’s fury.Love, mess, secrets; this story of four generations of women is filled with Ruth Jones's warmth and wisdom. Ruth's second novel, Us Three , was an instant Sunday Times bestseller in hardback and paperback and has sold almost a quarter of a million copies. This odd couple will go on three magical adventures to save books from people who have imprisoned, mistreated and betrayed them. What a wonderful, heart-warming, beautifully emotional story by Ruth Jones of 4 generations, trying to navigate their own lives and their relationships with others and each other. Finally, Beca, sixteen years old, artistic and musical but not good at lessons, constantly at odds with perfectionist Elin who sees education as a gateway to the world, she knows she is about to fail all her GCSEs and disappoint her mother, again. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. The plot is mostly set in the present, although there are a few moments where we flash back to different stages in the past 70 years. Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is idling in the unexpected sunshine when Christy makes his first entrance into Faha, bringing secrets for which he needs to atone.

Also found the colloquial grammer used whenever characters spoke irritating, ie the way all the gs were dropped - "nothin" "pickin" etc. Like many chic lit books the characters learn all about love; but unlike a lot of books, they experience the bad parts of love as well as the good. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One’s Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins.PRAISE FOR RUTH JONES'Heartfelt, joyful, brave, utterly compelling' RACHEL JOYCE'I adored it' JOANNA CANNON'Joyful, life-affirming' ADELE PARKS'Beautifully warm and totally absorbing. But Grace has recently received a postcard with a picture of Welsh hills on the front, painted by Alys Meredith. Told by a series of flashbacks the stories of Grace, Alys, Elin and Beca are revealed, together with a surprise twist at the end. LIZA, a professor, is pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves and GRACE, their dawdling youngest daughter, lives a lie that no one in her family suspects. The end of this story is incredibly moving and brought me to tears (and I have never cried over a book before).
