Cowgate was central and yet easy to ignore, being a canyon over which both the South Bridge and George IV Bridge passed, the mortuary itself an anonymous modern slab flanked by clubs and pubs.I really enjoyed this short story featuring DS Gish, set around a very exclusive and incredibly expensive apartment block in London. I need to start the new book by January so it can be delivered by June but I think I’m going to start it before that. The characters are simply sketched, but effective, and Gillian Gish makes for a very engaging detective. Malcolm Fox (he who once had his own series) also makes an appearance, which in my eyes is a little less welcome.

There’s a solid plot, enough character development, and the perfect ending, so much more than I expect from short stories. The circle of suspects is limited to the few people living in the apartments of the building and a game of elimination commences. I only joined the Rebus fan club about five years ago and this is my thirteenth visit to this Tartan crime noir story. The bestselling author, 61, said there would be no new Rebus novel in 2023 and that he will not attend any festivals or other book events.

No genuinely, I’ve got two friends who like listening to records, old school friends, so when I was furnishing this place I thought I just need three chairs, one for me and two for my mates. We question our own mortality when we hear Rebus talking about jigsaws and a full bladder, and clearly his health is failing. All of his novels have been nominated for major awards and his work is translated in over 30 languages. The shorter form does not allow for the large number of complexities of a Rebus novel but Rankin's talent slips many of them in there. For me, it all worked well in this book and, whilst I might not have been completely enamoured of all of the characters we met, I did grow to like DS Gish really quickly, despite having little knowledge of her on a personal level.
