About this deal

He wanted to do it himself so I left him to it, it looked good but unfortunately the engine made the noise but did not turn over. It is very easy to use and gives a lot of extra detail so you can learn a lot about what you have just built – so much better than just building a model and then just forgetting about it. Some mention that it works well and looks good, while others say that construction can lead to an almost functioning model, which can be frustrating. He built it over 2 days, fairly straightforward but a few fiddly bits especially the valves and springs.

Aimed at children aged 10 or over, the kit is a simplified version of a real engine but is not based on the unit from a particular car.The best clips on Driving Watch Tesla plough through floodwater Video: Ford Supervan EV races up Pikes Peak Video: Ferrari SF90 XX walkaround › More here.

Although the sounds require reworking and the fact that the V8 version is quite difficult for a younger child, this kit makes for a perfect gift that will provide a day or 2 of exited enter and learning while they build! From Haynes, the famous makers of vehicle service manuals, comes a range of detaled working engine models.

It is also beyond the ability of a 10 yr-old to assemble - probably a 14 yr-old could do it without adult help. Whilst you are assembling it you are not just learning to read and follow instructions, but it also helps children develop patience, hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity skills and problem solving skills.

Consider instead the Build Your Own V8 Engine kit from Haynes, a publisher best known for its car maintenance manuals. Bought for 13 year old son who is interested in cars, not sure what he would think but was very impressed. The build quality was not great and I swear (despite many attempts and double checking) that the cam timing is totally wrong (ok being a bit pedantic but its a critical part of an engine)and the spark plug lights also seem to be have the wrong timing. All in, it took 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete our model (that’s Christmas morning sorted, then). I suppose it is an excuse to re-do it all over Did mine my son's one yesterday and also forgot to lube the bearings. Is there no way to have the engine on and in motion for more than the 5 odd seconds it does something? To show it off, it is encased in a transparent housing so that you can see how the engine works and with the aid of a special interactive augmented reality app on your tablet or smartphone you can see what parts are and what they do. This is a free download which then gives an interactive experience with exploded views of the engine, animations of five key components and detailed descriptions of 11 engine parts.
