I knew that before purchasing it but still somewhat a shame, that there are never revised versions that included much more Norse Mythology. Honestly, I enjoyed Edith’s prose, it read very well and it’s quite modern, so it has that accessibility to it.And although each chapter starts with a reference, every now and then I got the sense there were parts missing, like the ending of the story of Arachne, where Edith Hamilton has a happy ending showing Athena regreting her anger to Arachne, but my 3 translations of Ovid’s Metamorphosis shows her wrath is not appeased as she also curses her family. There is about a page of rambling prose in the introduction in which the words "myth", "religion" and "Nature" appear together prominently, but no coherent thesis is advanced. They are my favourite, since they make between them almost a linear single story with cause-and-effect leading us from the creation of the world to its inevitable destruction. Indeed this book from the 40s gives a superb view of Greek Mythology (includes also Roman and Norse).

I know this is an unfair comparison, but earlier in the month I had been reading Oscar Wilde's stories for children, as well as some of Kipling's poetry, and I kept waiting for Hamilton to dazzle me, even just a little bit. All her knowledge came from classic literature; she has never been to Greece, and never participated in archaeology.
