About this deal

e. by his nephew Charles Butler (London, 1799); and Joseph Gillow's Bibliographical Dictionary of English Catholics, vol. The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints Compiled from Original Monuments and Authentic Records In Twelve Volumes Rev. Father Alban Butler was born in 1710, at Appletree, North-amptonshire, the second son of Simon Butler, Esq.

Father Butler's Lives of the Saints is an amazing book of devotion, arranged to follow the Catholic Church's calendar of feast days, and so is relevant every day of the year. I'm sure it would be much easier to retain more about individual saints and their stories if I did read one per day over the course of a year. It is on this account we have ventured to designate The Lives of the Saints an historical supplement to the Old and New Testaments. Alban Butler, The Lives of the Saints, presents to the reader the life story of over 1600 saints and their times.

The lives of the saints provide effective stimulation for the daily observance of our baptismal vows, for the practice of fidelity, justice, prayer and contemplation.

Butler's great work, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints ("Butler's Lives"), the result of thirty years' study, was first published in four volumes in London, 1756–1759. After twenty years of existence, we are happy, by the grace of God, to have completed two large buildings and a sizable portion of our abbatial church. Numerous conferences and publications testify to the increased attention being given to their lives as richly documented sources for the study of social and cultural, as well as religious history. The drawbacks are that unless you have a very good grasp of history it can be hard to understand what was going in in the saint's life. The twentieth century in particular has been noted as the century of martrys, many of which are featured prominently in this supplement to the new full edition of Butler’s Lives of the Saints, a continuation of the tradition of one of the most well-known and relied-upon reference works of all time.

PRIDE/stinking pride who puts itself above the Creator and says "i will not kneel for baby Jesus asleep in the hay of a manger. I have been reading these 4 books daily for about 30 years and have learned a tremendous amount of history of my Catholic faith. I enjoyed reading and learning about the daily saints, Doctors, and martyrs of the Church in concise, well-written, prose. This is the original version of Butler's Little Pictorial Lives first published in 1874 and largely taken from Butler's original work. This supplemental volume is highly recommended to those persons and libraries that already have the new edition of Butler's Lives.
