About this deal

So after Babar, his aunt, uncle, and cousins arrive in Africa, Babar is proclaimed King of the Jungle, since the former king ate some bad fruit and keeled over.

Fifty years ago a little elephant walked out of the jungle and found his way to Paris, where he bought himself a becoming green suit, a pair of shoes with spats, and a black derby hat. To this unique spirit of affirmation and delight there is only one thing left to say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABAR! The attention to stylish clothing perhaps reflects the fact that the original publisher of the books was Editions du Jardin des Modes, owned by Condé-Nast. Even i had issues deciphering a word here or there but i can only imagine the horror on a child's face if they were handed this :lol. With beautifully distinctive illustrations from Jean de Brunhoff, a sometimes surreal and sometimes moving story, and a loveable hero in the dignified Babar himself, The Story of Babar remains a firm favourite with children. Love and Happiness, who are at the heart of the American vision, are, in Babar’s dream, mere tiny camp followers. Babar's mom is killed by hunters, so he goes off to the big city and is taken in by a rich old lady who happens to like elephants and he becomes her boy toy. However, the illustrations also stem from this era and I quite like the fact that Babar obviously drives a vintage car and wears spats - a fair trade-off with the book's darker moments, I think.

First French-language edition (published during WWII in the US) of Jean de Brunhoff's final Babar title, in which Babar makes the long trip to enlist Father Christmas's help. Babar, following his mother's murder at the hands of white hunters, blithely follows their path back to the white city. I just thought I'd save you the trouble of reading this stupid kid's book by writing everything that happens. It was a bedtime story told by his wife Cécile to two of their sons, Laurent and Mathieu, that led to worldwide acclaim. Not really, but it is a strange lady to spend her riches on elephant clothes and she gives this elephant her car, not a cheap gift. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. Babar has a dream where he is visited by Misfortune and other demons which are chased away by elephant angels representing Courage, Hope, and other virtues.

And we go to the imaginary New York for the pleasure of the self-made: to see two children actually hide and live in a museum; to see an alligator, or a mouse, absorbed uncontroversially into a normal life. In summary, this is an essential children's book but whilst the paperback edition is large and colourful, it is obviously not a robust as a hardback book.Picasso saw this keenly, speaking often (if with a hint of condescension) of how crucially the drawings of Matisse’s children had affected their father’s art, and for the better, supplying a kind of domestic primitivism, an African art of the nursery.

That is visible even in a masterpiece as sophisticated as Matisse’s “Piano Lesson,” of 1916, where the play between the oppressive weight of French teaching and the gasping attempt at pleasure weighs on the boy. SIGNED BY LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF on what would be the half-title with an original drawing of Babar and one of the children; no inscription. The first two of Jean de Brunhoff's Babar books have inspired two major concert works: L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant ( The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant) by Francis Poulenc in 1940; and The Travels of Babar (Le Voyage de Babar) by Raphael Mostel in 1994. The fragility of this society—and its inability to resist the rhinoceroses—only intensifies the pathos and affection it inspires. This beautiful book is a REAL children's book (as opposed to a book, that adults think children should like! The Mary Poppins stories, “Peter Pan,” “The Wind in the Willows,” and, in a slightly different way, “The Hobbit” all use an idea of England and, often, of London.
