Joyce diverges from the hyperbolic, pleasurably bizarre imagery he created for The Leaf Men and Dinosaur Bob in this digitally enhanced but uneventful picture book. Joyce's irresistible illustrations and joyous wordplay ("I am the Grand High Safemaster of Planet Billy," Ollie tells himself) are icing on the cake. Sensitive readers may find Zozo too frightening, but many will get a thrillfrom the perilous, high-stakes adventure, where bravery and friendship reign supreme.

Also, some of the scenes were quite dark and not really suitable for the age group it is catering to. The writing was in the POV of either Billy or Ollie, and I thought it was well done by William Joyce.In a rousing climax, Ollie and his loyal junkyard allies overcome Zozo and free the toys: "Okay," he tells his troops, "Our plan is gonna be: do some Robin Hood, and some Use the Force Luke, and some Trojan Horse, and some. The bond between the child and his favorite toy brought me great nostalgia about how realistic my favorite toys were to me when I was growing up. The clown villain is unnecessarily horror movie creepy in the illustrations, so we waited until my kids were 9 and 11 for this one. Discuss the change in dynamics between Billy being the protector of Ollie to Ollie being the protector of Billy.

The dashing derring-do of this eponymous hero is set forth in eight piquant chapters that offer, according to PW , ``high adventure and rib-tickling hilarity in the best tall-tale tradition. The third-person narration retains a storyteller's wisdom as it shifts between Billy and Ollie's naive perspectives; pacing is leisurely despite Zozo's sinister presence being introduced fairly early in the plot. Well Kirkus can suck it, because although it's true that this story was probably somewhat inspired by The Velveteen Rabbit, "Toy Story," and even perhaps "The Brave Little Toaster," it's still one of the most unique middle grade novels I've read in awhile.It will also be a great choice for those strong readers who are still very young, who need a challenging read but aren't ready for more mature middle grade fiction aimed more at 10 and 11 year olds. Was Billy correct in thinking that leaving a trail of toys behind was safer than the crumbs that Hansel and Gretel used to help them find their way home?
