About this deal

The words were those that children used to name the natural world around them: acorn, adder, bluebell, bramble, conker – gone! In his lifetime, he illustrated over 80 books, and received many awards, including the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are . My sister (who was five at the time) received the book as a present when she started grade one in September 1976, but I ended up hijacking it for a while, as I wanted to practice reading English and Little Bear was at that time just the right level of difficulty for me.

He also illustrated Swine Lake (1999), authored by James Marshall, Brundibar (2003), by Tony Kushner, Bears (2005), by Ruth Krauss and, Mommy?The New York Times has recognized that Sendak's work “has brought a new dimension to the American children's book and has helped to change how people visualize childhood. It was an auspicious beginning, as it perfectly captures the gentle rhythms of childhood exploration and retreat, and of the child's bond with his mother. And in the picture we see this bear, quite enormously huge, filling the whole of the glowing red page. Little Bear is a series of children's books written by Else Holmelund Minarik and primarily involving the interaction of Little Bear, an anthropomorphic cub, and Mother Bear, his mother. This book does wonders for dispelling the fear of the dark as well as for encouraging the patience of parents everywhere.

One thing I don't understand is why "Birthday Soup" is written in the present tense while the three other stories are in the past tense.The sympathy for the child perspective that is evident here never feels condescending, however, and even though this is a book for younger children, the author respects her audience enough to be honest with them about some of the limitations - not every wish will be granted, for instance - that they will inevitably confront. A warm, humorous tale of family relations for ages 4 - 8 with illustration by Maurice Sendak (1928 - 2012). Bec Winnel is an accomplished Australian photographic artist, whose work combines photography, painting, graphic design and anything else she finds fun to create with. To experience the idea of the different types of light used for the little bear to try and get to sleep we give the children different sized lanterns and a flickering candle to look at.
