About this deal
JG: Oh yeah, I probably did more pioneering work in the beginning with Fly Lines than I ever did with rods.
They are initially quite stiff, due to the fairly thick double layer construction and the heavy rubber unit lug sole, but soften up after a few weeks of casual wear, and a few short hikes. After having compiled a list of those who I thought should be paid tribute, one man's name topped the list …Jim Green. It wasn’t long before Jim Green had gained a reputation amongst local communities, living up to its’ name of being tough, rugged, and able to go the distance: eventually becoming a household name across South Africa. To this day I have always said that the worst thing that ever happened to Fenwick was the development of the Graphite Rod.But the average person today that has grown up with Fly Fishing in the last 15 years, they wouldn't understand it, because they have no idea what kind of feel a Bamboo Rod has. Because when i open the shoe box all that was in there to either separate the shoes so the did not hit each other or to make sure they did not move around was i kid you not a little peace of tissue paper. But as I say it is difficult to work with, it splinters very easily and would get into the employees fingers.
So I took one of the blanks that I had to make this two piece fly rod and I thought, “well if I could move the tip further up the blank, why it would be softer of course”. Jim is internationally recognised and has been keynote speaker or coordinator of conferences in the UK, Turkey, USA, Australia and Europe. I had worn boots that always push my toes together and end up being uncomfortable, plus super plush which I discovered gives me like knee pain after long day out. It's amazing when you think about it, you take all these materials, Bamboo, Glass, Graphite in some cases Boron. The padded collar and tongue (with high gussets) do a great job of keeping seed pods, burrs, and other debris out. Only caveat, for me at any rate, is the need for an extra arch support under the supplied insole (which is excellent quality otherwise). Build quality is top notch, I would say these are perfect for trekking days on end whether it be paths, rocky trails, or in mud, these handle all those conditions.
