Now for simple reading pleasure, instead of The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha, I do in fact still very much prefer the King James Bible, which we actually read at school for grade seven English (the Old Testament) and for grade eight English (the New Testament) and thus in the early 1980s. This fifth edition of the Annotated remains the best way to study and understand the Bible at home or in the classroom.

I would highly recommend if you haven't already undertaken a similar project that you consider doing so. The contents do not provide any way of navigating to individual chapters or verses of a book in the Bible. I even purchased a second copy so that I could keep one at work and one at home making it easier to keep up on the daily reading schedule. Beginning with a specific passage or a significant concept, finding information for meditation, sermon preparation, or academic study is straightforward and intuitive. Color maps, timelines, parallel texts, weights and measures, calendars, and other helpful tables help navigate the biblical world.What I liked: The historical essays leading off each book, section and Athens are simply outstanding. It covers a vast range of information due to its ecumenical range of experts; and features solid introductions, full annotations, informative essays on major topics, timelines and tables, maps and diagrams, an extensive glossary, and an overall index. Of course, the Fourth Edition retains the features prized by students, including single column annotations at the foot of the pages, in-text charts, and maps, a page number-keyed index of all the study materials in the volume, and Oxford's renowned Bible maps. If you engage me on the basis of conversion I will not indulge you, but whether you are religious or not and wish to discuss and challenge any of my thoughts, please feel free. Use of the title 'Old Testament' for those books here designated as 'the Hebrew Bible' is confined to instances expressing the historical view of various Christian interpreters.

I'm sick at heart when my former fundie peers pervert reason and their own minds "reconciling" the Bible's obviously irreconcilable contradictions in ways that would be laughed out of court if they were applied to any other corpus of literature, or produce grotesque readings of passages whose meanings are often plain enough but that contradict what they want to believe, claiming the "inspiration of the Holy Spirit" as if it provided access to some kind of interpretive Holy of Holies rather than failing to constitute even the most patently miserable of excuses for their blatantly warped interpretations. But I also and really do have to wonder if in today's world, reading the King James Bible in a secular type of school setting would even be deemed as acceptable and as appropriate (although indeed, our perusal in English class was always completely and totally based on seeing and approaching the King James Bible as a work of literature, as a work of fiction, and not ever as religious dogma).Each chapter of the Bible is preceded by an introduction, placing the writing in a historical context.
