is smaller (though not lighter), but it is also slower, having a narrower max aperture over some of the focal length range. it's a good lens with good sharpness (specially in the center) but AF is sometimes unpredictable which can be frustrating for the photograph. Tightly cropped head shots will start showing perspective distortion - including big noses - and are are best avoided. The front filter thread rotates during both AF and MF, complicating the use of polarizers, gradient filters, and rectangular systems.

IS II is a high-quality, standard zoom lens that will appeal to photographers who prefer to travel light.An aspherical lens element delivers crisp, high contrast images - even with the aperture fully open.

It's sharp enough for what I in tended to shoot and the style of editing I intend to do in the coming weeks. Even if you're not interested in the image stabilization that's been added, the addition of the aspherical lens element (and whatever other fine-tuning the lens wizards have been up to in the lab) shows off improved sharpness and resistance to chromatic aberration.I've come to realize I use CPL and grad filters all the time and the sigma allows use of these with its non-rotating front element, and this makes a HUGE difference for me in terms of getting the pictures I like to take. This is a moderately wide angle of view that is common with EF-S zoom lenses, but 18mm may leave you wishing for modestly wider on occasion, especially when photographing wide landscapes, interiors and architecture. The build quality: I have seen worse but it would have been nice if canon would have made the manual focusing a bit nicer, smoother etc.
