About this deal

I particularly loved the way in which he shifts between his trademark, intricately detailed black ink drawings to a big colour splash page, often using large blocks of white space for extra emphasis and occasionally dropping in some bizarre 360 degree layouts as the cherry on top. Seen through today’s eyes, it is a very mild affair and this or any of the other Mr Benn stories would make a worthy addition to any child’s bookshelf.

According to Mr Benn's Little Book of Life, very little of McKee's original artwork created for the television episodes exists today, as most of it was thrown into a rubbish skip in the 1970s. In an interview with the BBC in May 2014, McKee stated that, on a film version: "I'd like to see that [the film] happen, because Mr Benn's a big boy and he can live his own life.Unlike certain other famous authors of the period, there is no need to edit or redact these tales for the modern audience! The people may be simply drawn, but they have a great deal of character - even the ever-changing Mr Benn.

As soon as he puts it on, he finds himself transported to a mysterious jungle full of snakes, elephants, and hunters. Fortunately, Mr Benn and his friends come up with an ingenious plan to save all the gladiators and give the Emperor a taste of his own medicine. Shocked with the scenery, he finds himself in an isolated landscape but rides off in a clown car he finds. It is a much larger book than I expected, with huge pictures which look exactly the same as the TV series, only with some words too.His books are published in many languages throughout the world, and many of them have been adapted for television. The thing I most love about Mr Benn though, is the sense of childhood innocence they portray through their eponymous hero. Each of the adventures themselves is sufficiently different from the others to make it enjoyable to read one after another - parents won't get bored at all. It doesn’t keep children glued to the screen, it makes them look up, look around and get inspired by the world. McKee did not benefit financially to the extent he might have: "I signed a contract where I only got a one-off payment and no repeat fees, but I've done quite well from a number of other things and I'm still exhibiting paintings.

Elektronische Impulse [auf Label:] Elektronisches Scherzo / Sonate für Klavier (1951) / Aprèslude - Vier Lieder nach Gedichten von Gottfried Benn / What about this, Mr.In the early part of his career, McKee regularly drew and sold humorous drawings to magazines and newspapers such as The Times Educational Supplement, Punch and the Reader’s Digest. Nostalgia can often colour one's views - it's all too easy to remember loving something, rather than actually loving it again in the cold light of day. Although Smasher Lagru features in The Gladiator, he does not appear in The Clown as the book in which he made his debut, 123456789Benn, was not adapted for television – thus it would have been strange that he and Mr Benn already knew each other. Or to sum it all up in one simple sentence: it's a Mr Benn book, and it's as good as you remember the TV series being. If you're on a nostalgia trip, then Top Ten Timeless Picture Books To Treasure Forever is full of great books.
