About this deal

You can read this if you want to know more about life in Singapore and the very evident class divide between the domestic workers and the locals. It does as much as it can to recast the gaze on Black and brown people, eliciting empathy and the desire for justice. It’s a juicy read and fun (fans of Crazy Rich Asians and My Favorite Murder will totally be on board) while simultaneously layering in nuanced social commentary. Brazen and exuberant, Donita’s thrown herself into a love affair with an Indian construction worker and started a lively social media account that says more than it should. As the narrative moved to some of the other perspectives, however, I'm not sure if some of the other personalities were as intriguing or easy to relate to as hers.

Then an explosive news story shatters Singapore’s famous tranquility—and sends a chill down the spine of every domestic worker. Angel, a lesbian recovering from a bad break-up, has to fend off sexual harassment from her employer’s son. At the same time, Now You See Us thoroughly interrogates labor conditions of Filipina domestic workers in Singapore and the constraints imposed upon their autonomy. Balli Kaur Jaswal is the author of four novels, including Singapore Literature Prize finalist "Sugarbread," and the international bestseller "Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows," which was a selection of Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine book club. Spanning 400 years, this exhibition follows women on their journeys to becoming professional artists.Intricately plotted, propulsive, and provocative, Now You See Us showcases an author at the peak of her talents. The five juvenile males of color, the protagonists of the series: Kevin Richardson ( Asante Blackk), Antron McCray ( Caleel Harris), Yusef Salaam (Ethan Herisse), Korey Wise ( Jharrel Jerome), and Raymond Santana (Marquis Rodriguez), were divided by the prosecutor into two groups for trial. So when a friend is accused of murder, they decide to take things into their own hands to try to clear her name. The three women don’t know the accused well, but she could be any of them; every worker knows stories of women who were scapegoated or even executed for crimes they didn’t commit. Thank you for William Morrow and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
