About this deal

Lynda La Plante was made an honorary fellow of the British Film Institute and was given the BAFTA Dennis Potter Award in 2000. The fifth book in the Tennison series following Jane Tennison in the early years of her policing career. In 1991 ITV released Prime Suspect which has now run to seven series and stars Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison. Age doesn’t mean anything when faced with a women this driven in her career, and this dedicated to the heart of her craft. The first book, published in 2004, finds Anna Travis a rookie female detective working her very first, rather gruesome, case.

The story is so well written, the characters became very familiar and once I began reading, it was very difficult to stop, the tension building as the case was building. Fabulously wealthy entrepreneur Sir William Benedict has always dreamed of being accepted amongst society's elite, despite his working class roots. The show was a critical and commercial success, and La Plante won a BAFTA award for Best Drama Series. But when scratch marks are found on the inside of the coffin lid, Detective jane Tennison believes she has unearthed a mystery far darker than any she's investigated before.

When WPC Jane Tennison is promoted to the role of Detective Constable in London’s Bow Street CID, she is immediately conflicted. Set sometime in the 1970s, La Plante’s middling seventh procedural featuring Jane Tennison as a young cop (after 2020’s Blunt Force) finds the detective sergeant posted to the CID office in the London borough of Bromley, where she moved after. It is interesting to watch investigations being dealt with “old school” without the aid of mobile phones and the internet but for me it gave me the chance to watch the characters develop and see how their skills and styles could compliment and hinder the investigations in equal measure. Having avidly read all the Tennison books, it has been marvellous to read how Jane became DCI Tennison.

I have finally stopped kicking myself for taking so long to read this series as it is completely addictive. When an eccentric widow claims she is being stalked by her former lodger, Detective Jack Warr is the only person who believes her wild claims.

Yet one thing is clear to Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison about the latest victim discovered in one of London's poorest districts - that news of her murder will tear apart a city already cracking with racial tensions, hurling Scotland Yard and Tennison herself into a maelstrom of shocking accusations and sudden, wrenching violence. Should she risk her life to bring the killer to justice and claim the reward, or entrust the task to someone more experienced and reliable?
